The Financial Counselor is responsible for verifying insurance eligibility and benefits for both planned and emergency admissions; obtaining necessary authorizations for procedures and admissions; assisting patients with understanding their insurance benefits; assisting patients in applying for various Medi-Cal programs; and determining and discussing service cost and necessary deposits.

QUALIFICATIONS

· Prior experience preferred, preferably in the healthcare industry; other related experience will also be considered.

· At least one (1) year of related experience in accounting or bookkeeping; other related experience will also be considered.

· Professional customer service skills; advocacy experience or related training desirable.

· PC literacy with experience in Microsoft Word and Excel.

· Maturity and reliability.

· Emotional stability conducive to dealing with a fast-paced environment, rapidly changing conditions, emotional demands, and maintaining effective working relationships with peers.

· Good written and verbal communication skills.

The hourly wage is based on prior related experience.

Mad River Hospital is a Level IV ER trauma center, an award-winning Level 1 Birth Center, and operates several outpatient clinics, including: surgery, orthopedic, occupational health, pain management, wound care, four primary care clinics, and three physical therapy/sports rehabilitation clinics in Arcata, McKinleyville, and Willow Creek. Additionally, the 2-acre on-site farm that provides our cafeteria with produce for serving patients and staff.
