Lutheran Social Services is Hiring a Tutor, Mentoring Services Near Sioux Falls, SD

LSS Mentoring Services seeks tutors who desire to encourage kids in their ability to learn. If you have a drive to support kids in their education and help them reach their academic objectives, we would love to see your application. Join us as we work to improve the scholastic journey of these children.

HOURS: Part-time, a maximum of 10 hours per week.

  • Tutoring, Monday to Thursday, 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm
  • Friday, Administrative Work

BENEFITS:

  • $300 hiring bonus*
  • 401K Match
  • Employee Recognition
  • Employee Assistance Program

SALARY: $20 per hour

RESPONSIBILITIES: Tutors are needed at Cleveland Elementary School and Rosa Parks Elementary School for the spring season, and Robert Frost Elementary School and Hayward Elementary School during the summer.

In the Spring, tutors will lead 30 minute sessions containing up to four kids per group, with sessions taking place Monday through Thursday after school (3:00 to 5:30 pm depending on the location’s specific conditions). Each tutor will work a maximum of 10 hours, with 2 hours of built in time to coordinate with parents, teachers, and other administrative (non-tutoring) activities. On days when the tutor cannot come in, tutoring will not occur as substitutes are not provided. There is no tutoring on no school days or breaks.

Summer tutoring will run from 8:30 to 11:30 am, with two sessions, each an hour and a half in length. Each session will have 45 minutes of math and 45 minutes of reading skills. Summer groups will be about six kids.

Our goal is to help students who are under grade level reach sufficient benchmarks, with our first target being fifth graders. Elementary school graduates should be ready for the rigors of middle school rather than start at an educational disadvantage. A love of learning is a cornerstone of a robust education, and the ability to encourage and direct students in their studies is vital.

QUALIFICATIONS: Must have a commitment to helping kids reach their academic potential. Must be at least 18 years old. Must have experience with children and education. Must understand the elementary school curriculum. Preferably a degree in elementary education or equivalent experience.

Must successfully complete all agency background checks.
