Co-founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson and led by director and CEO Sandra Jackson-Dumont, the Lucas Museum was designed by renowned architect Ma Yansong of MAD Architects with Stantec as executive architect and is under construction in Los Angeles’s Exposition Park. An 11-acre campus with extensive new green space designed by Studio-MLA will embrace the museum’s 300,000-square-foot building, which will feature expansive galleries, two state-of-the-art theaters, and dedicated spaces for learning and engagement, dining, retail, and events. www.lucasmuseum.org .
Position SummaryThis position is based in the San Francisco Bay area and is a 6 month termed full-time exempt position with the possibility of extension.
The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art seeks an experienced Assistant Registrar to work with the Museum Services team. Reporting to the Head of Registration, the Assistant Registrar will coordinate and implement all registration aspects for the inventory and cataloging of the Lucas Film Archive (LFA) collection of works on paper, costumes, models, large-scale, and small-scale props. The position holder will act as primary registration contact for this project team and will collaborate closely with Registration, Curatorial Researchers, Collections Management, Collections Information and Digital Assets and other relevant parties to implement the strategy and approach of the LFA object inventory, cataloging, and historic record review.
This position will focus on detailed, object-focused information and data management in preparation for the eventual collection move. The position holder will adhere to and implement best practices for registration including, but not limited to, the implementation of inventory information workflows between Curatorial Researchers, Collections Management, and Registration; documentation of the cataloging and research process; managing the integrity of the inventory data for its ingestion into The Museum System (TMS), the museum’s collections management system; physical condition inspecting, photo documenting, measuring of collection objects; and implementing a strategy for reviewing, digitizing, and archiving historic object records.
Responsibilities
  • Collaborates with Collections Information and Digital Assets and Curatorial Researcher teams to implement inventory data workflows and TMS database data entry standards to achieve accuracy on LFA collection data and complexity reduction
  • Physically processes, conditions, photographs, measures, tags, and inventories LFA collection objects
  • Responsible for maintaining detailed documentation of the LFA inventory, cataloging and research process, and producing reporting on the inventory progress and roadblocks
  • Applies existing data standards and research findings to update and build out more robust and accurate object records within the museum's collections management database and the LFA digital files
  • Uploads new images to TMS object records and ensures image and data integrity
  • Works closely with collection managers, researchers, and associate registrar in the coordination, scheduling and monitoring of the safe movements of objects
  • Tracks locations of objects for the purpose of object assessments, preparation, re-housing and shipping
  • Collaborates with Curatorial Researchers in the review, digitization, and archiving of historic physical object records and other duties as assigned by the Head of Registration

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in museum studies, arts administration, library and information sciences, art, art history, or a closely related field, required
  • Three to four (3-4) years of verifiable museum registration experience, required
  • Experience managing inventory projects, preferred
  • Proven experience handling collections and image data with a high-level degree of accuracy, required
  • Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
  • Advanced knowledge of automated collections and registrations systems, preferably The Museum System (TMS), and general knowledge of relational database systems
  • Exceptional attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy
  • Understanding of museum documentation and cataloging standards
  • Familiarity with basics of digital asset management and digitization techniques and workflows
$29 - $33 an hour
