As our Senior Accountant, you'll play a key part in launching our new entities across Europe, blending the thrill of travel with the challenge of shaping our global presence. Our growing company is hiring for a compliance accountant responsible for compliance and statutory leadership and guidance with GAAP, monthly internal compliance, annual external audit reporting, and external international audit. This individual will work with several departments within Backroads as well as with external firms and partners. Collaborate effectively with peers in our Berkeley, CA headquarters, and our global offices to coordinate and assure excellence in accounting practices and financial reporting across Backroads’ family of entities. Key Responsibilities: GENERAL ACCOUNTING Be the go-to resource for all matters relating to compliance with GAAP, IFRS and other regulatory standard affecting the private accounting global tour operator industry. Support finance and accounting teams in the production of excellent accounting results. Represent Accounting Internal Controls and work to develop new and evaluate and enhance existing internal controls to protect Backroads financial assets. Evaluate, research and propose internal accounting and financial statement presentation for new or revised business projects or proposals (e.g. large software projects, etc.) AUDIT Coordinate with and support finance personnel to deliver audit selections, PBC schedules and respond to audit inquiries. Prepare and analyze audit compliance reporting as requested FOREIGN SUBS Implement and document start-up and ongoing accounting procedures for newly established and/or acquired entities and in collaboration with Backroads personnel and third-party accounting & tax service providers. Support the establishment of banking relationships and ensure the creation and documentation of robust and timely payment processes in furtherance of excellent accounting processes and procedures. Prepare or review account reconciliations prepared by foreign subsidiary staff and/or external service providers. Provide meaningful reporting to management to ensure confidence in the excellence of subsidiary accounting processes and procedures. Fixed Assets. Collaborate with third party accountant(s) for the proper accounting for asset purchases, sales, disposals and related intercompany accounting. Prepare schedules and accounting entries to support translation of internal fixed asset accounting to GAAP. Ensure that all month, quarter and year-end financial reporting is accurate and delivered by third party service providers, according to Backroads deadlines and in accordance with required accounting and quality standards. Support all financial statement consolidation activities (translation, account mapping, reconciliation of translation adjustment accounts, etc) Review financial statements accuracy and provide explanations for significant variances from budgets and forecasts. Make recommendations for any necessary adjustments to financial accounting records and follow through with third party service providers to assure their completion. Evaluate the service delivery of the accounting processes performed by third party service provider, ensuring that all service levels are met, the internal control environment is robust and that an excellent level of quality service is provided. Assure the accurate preparation and ongoing maintenance of all intercompany Services Agreements, billings and including compliance with transfer pricing policies in force. TAX (PROPERTY, SALES, USE, etc) Prepares timely and accurate sales and use tax filings for numerous state and local jurisdictions. Researches Property Tax Reports for all states and local jurisdictions Prepares timely and accurate sales and use tax filings for numerous state and local jurisdictions. Researches sales and use tax laws and rulings. Reconciles sales tax general ledger accounts and prepares applicable journal entries. Counsel accounts payable on Use Tax Accrual Procedures. Counsel Pricing team on Sales Tax Procedures Collaborate with internal and external SMEs regarding tax nexus in locations where Backroads operates and propose necessary steps to assure compliance with US and International regulations. Reviews and responds to governmental regulatory notices and coordinates and/or prepares research and analysis to evaluate appropriate actions to take in response. INSURANCE Project Manage the annual Backroads insurance program renewal in collaboration and coordination with internal Backroads teams and external insurance brokers. Coordinate the production of reports required by the business and its insurance brokers, by manipulating and analyzing data quickly and efficiently, with extensive use of formulas, pivot tables, v-Lookups and other Excel functions. Providing ad-hoc support and counsel to the wider Risk Management organization embedded within Backroads. Skills and Abilities: High attention to detail and ability follow directions and procedures, provide up-to-date records on status of all clients at all times Ability to think in an analytical manner Ability to process large amounts of data with high attention to detail Exceptional Excel skills and proficiency with all Microsoft Office tools Excellent written and verbal communications skills Superior prioritization, organization and time management skills to balance multiple projects efficiently and on time Professional communication with external audit teams and staff Strong teamwork, work ethic, and customer service mindset Education and Experience: A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Economics, Law Strong Knowledge of U.S. GAAP (IFRS a plus) A minimum of four years of experience in compliance, or in a related area International accounting experience (MBA and/or CPA designation is a big plus) Physical Requirements: Comfort with prolonged periods at a desk and working on a computer.
