Description

Reporting to the Director of the Primary Care Programs, this student worker position is for the LSUHSC Student Medical Scribe Program. Applicants are required to be part-time undergraduate or graduate students who intend to apply to medical school, and/or who are actively enrolled in their college’s pre-medical program. Accepted students will have prior medical scribing experience or will be required to complete a preparatory scribe training program prior to being accepted into the program.

Successful scribes will be employed by LSUHSC as student workers and will accompany primary care providers during clinical patient encounters to assist in documenting the examination and treatment of clinical patients. During clinical encounters, scribes are responsible for properly documenting patient histories, physical exams, assessments, treatment plans, diagnoses, medications, and follow-up instructions via the electronic health record (EHR) of the facility where they are assigned. In addition, scribes are responsible for organizing healthcare data to provide better service and efficiency of clinical care, and may generate referral letters for physicians, book appointments, manage and organize medical documents, or complete additional clerical tasks as needed.

Student medical scribes will work directly under their assigned physician’s supervision and will adhere to all LSUHSC-NO compliance requirements, policies and procedures, and those set forth by the assigned physician’s medical facility. In addition, student medical scribes must be accompanied by their assigned physician during all clinical encounters and are restricted from participating in patient care or clinical decision making. All applicants must pass a background check and complete all LSUHSC-NO and medical facility training prior to being assigned to a clinical site.

Qualifications

Requirements:
 Successful applicants will be undergraduate or graduate students who have completed at least 45 credit hours of undergraduate coursework, of which at least 15 hours are pre-medical courses.
 Students must be in good academic standing and have a minimum 3.3 grade point average on a 4.0-point scale. Good academic standing is denoted by a student not being on academic probation or warning and having the required minimum grade point average noted above.
 One letter of recommendation must be from the applicants’ pre-medical faculty advisor.
 Selected students who have no prior scribing experience will be required to a successfully complete a preparatory scribe training program through the Primary Care Programs Office. The training program will be of no cost to the student, but students will be required to pass and complete the course within the time allotted by the Primary Care Programs Office.
After completing all required scribe training, students will be matched with LSUHSC primary care clinical sites to function in a way that fits their college schedules.
Student medical scribes will receive an hourly wage, which will be based on the student’s education and prior experience.
 Only full-time students can be employed as student workers. Specifically, students must be enrolled in an undergraduate college for 12 or more hours of credit in the fall and spring or enrolled in graduate school for 9 or more hours of credit in the fall and spring.
 Undergraduate or graduate students can work during the summer if they meet one of the following requirements:
o students enrolled for 6 or more hours of credit in the summer may work up to 20 hours per week, or;
o students that have completed the prior spring term as a full-time student and have full-time hours scheduled for the upcoming fall term may work up to 40 hours per week.
