General Summary

The Principal Engineer oversees the engineering department technical research, development, and design at the highest level. The Principal Engineer is a senior engineering expert in our methods, designs and programs, and provides critical thinking and problem resolution on our most difficult and challenging engineering problems. The Principal Engineer provides senior technical guidance to the engineering department during the execution of programs. The Principal Engineer reports to, supports, and executes the vision of the Vice President, Engineering.

Essential Job Functions

•  Provides senior technical guidance and leadership for projects supported by engineering.
• Works with Engineering leadership to establish and execute departmental goals.
• Performs assessments of projects and provides recommendations to Engineering leadership.
• Works directly on programs providing critical thinking and problem resolution on our most difficult and challenging engineering problems.
• Guides engineering teams to complete projects on time and within budget.
• Leads the development of engineering department processes.
• Mentors and trains junior engineers.
• Acts as the technical business development liaison. Supports business development activities.
• Leads our engineering research and development efforts for demonstrations, new technology insertion, and competitive gains.
• Must be capable of safely handling government-furnished equipment and materials.
• Must be available to work a standard weekly schedule with overtime as required.
• Perform other duties as assigned. 

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Mentor all disciplines of junior engineers in LSI engineering processes and methods.
• Mentor all disciplines of junior engineers in our various product lines including their technologies and functionality.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Must be an expert in a particular engineering discipline (i.e., software, systems, electrical, or mechanical).
• Must have good understanding of a broad range of engineering disciplines.
• Must have expert knowledge of simulation software and hardware methods, designs, and solutions used at LSI to recommend systems to best fit customer requirements.
• Must be self-motivated.
• Must be able to work well in a team environment.
• Excellent writing and presentation skills.
• Ability to establish priorities to ensure tasks are accomplished on schedule.
• Must be able to obtain a security clearance when required by the contract.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in an engineering major and ten (10) years’ experience in engineering discipline.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent with twelve (12) years’ experience in engineering discipline.
• Advanced degree in engineering is preferred.
