LoveWorks Academy is Hiring a Building Substitute (K-4 and 5-8) Near Minneapolis, MN

Under the direction of the CAO-S, the Principal and the Director of Operations, the Building Substitute teaches and supports students in the event that their regular Teacher or instructional aide is unable to lead or support the class. Their duties include managing classroom behavior, quickly interpreting lesson plans, and creating reports to inform the students’ permanent Teacher of their success. Building Substitute duties and responsibilities: In order to create an encouraging learning environment for students while their regular Teacher or instructional aide will need to effectively manage, instruct, or support the class from roll call through to tidying up the classroom after the students have left. Some of the

Building Substitute’s duties and responsibilities include:

● Follow lesson plans provided by the regular Teacher to create a cohesive and consistent learning experience for students

● Manage the classroom effectively to encourage student participation, minimize distractions and maintain a positive learning environment

● Adapt teaching methods to fit the needs of each individual student

● Supervise students in and out of the classroom, including in the halls, on the playground, and in the cafeteria

● Provide in-class and at-home assignments based on the available lesson plan

● Performs related duties as required

● Assists instructional personnel with the presentation of learning materials and in the conduct of instructional exercises.

● Tutors individual students and small groups of students with special learning needs to reinforce and follow-up learning and training activities. ● Monitors and assists students with special learning needs in a variety of instructional activities as a follow-up to the presentation of instructional lessons by instructional personnel.

● Monitors and assists in the remediation of specific learning problems and conditions.

● Confers with teachers and specialists to develop and evaluate individual and group educational goals and objectives; assists school site(s) with the implementation of special education programs as assigned; assists instructors with individual education plans and report preparation schedules.

● Uses positive reinforcement strategies and other appropriate techniques to assist students in the development of appropriate behavior and an appreciation of human diversity.

● Prepares and assists in the preparation of a variety of instructional materials and learning aids geared to the instructional level of students in the class or program; collaborates with classroom teacher, or special education teacher to design and implement curriculum modifications and accommodations as necessary.

● For long-term substitutes: develop lesson plans and assignments consistent with the regular Teacher’s past lesson plan Qualifications: Knowledge of and Ability to:

• Basic concepts of child growth and development.

• Developmental behavior characteristics.

• General needs and behaviors of students; special needs of students who have behavioral, or learning disabilities.

• Basic behavior management strategies and techniques relating to pupils.

• Basic and specialized instructional techniques for working with students.

• Basic reading, writing, math, and communication skills in order to assist students with academics.

• Basic assessment skills.

• Communication skills to interact in both formal and informal settings.

• Safe practices in classroom activities.

• Basic office procedures, methods, and computer equipment. Ability to:

• Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups, including those exhibiting specialized needs.

• Understand organization and school site operations and objectives.

• Learn methods and procedures to be followed in assigned instructional situation.

• Understand the needs of assigned students and effectively relate to these needs in a learning situation.

• Effectively supervise students in a variety of situations.

• Appropriately manage student behavior and guide students toward more acceptable social behaviors.

• Operate a variety of educational and office-related machines, equipment, computers, and supporting software applications.

• Maintain composure under stressful situations.

• Perform effectively and assertively in situations requiring tact, diplomacy, and good judgment.

• Interact with Teachers and administrators, parents, and specialists in order to carry out assigned duties.

• Produce routine written program reports and correspondence.

• Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Education/Training:

● Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution

● Valid substitute teaching permit issued by PELSB

● Some experience in dealing with school age children with various special needs.
