Job Description:
Research Associate 3 (part- time or full- time)
Individual most possess comprehensive knowledge and experience in molecular biology techniques including but not limited to cell culture, RT-PCR, western blotting, basic histology, and ELISA Person should be detail oriented and highly motivated with a well-rounded research background. Individual must be able and willing to acquire new skills through both formal training and instruction as needed. Supervision of laboratory trainees with diverse expertise levels is required. The individual is responsible for maintenance of and training on all laboratory equipment. The individual is responsible for laboratory procedures and animal care. This advertisement is for either a full time or part- time position (30 hours per week, 75% effort)
  • 15% Schedule, organize, perform and troubleshoot/optimize research procedures/techniques for numerous simultaneous research projects involving multiple steps and a variety of materials and equipment. Identify appropriate new research procedures as needed. Learn, implement, and perform these procedures. Must be capable of identifying appropriate assays and evaluations, performing them, and analyzing results independently.
  • 15% Perform various bench top laboratory procedures. Identify appropriate new analytical techniques as needed. Learn, implement and perform these techniques; and interpret and report obtained results. Optimize/troubleshoot both new and existing techniques, and suggest alternative methods where appropriate. Leads and teaches other technicians, students and professionals in performance of new and existing techniques.
  • 15% Supervise and coordinate daily observation and monitoring of study subjects on numerous simultaneous projects independently. Schedule, organize, and independently collect or supervise collection of samples or data from study subjects as necessary. Prepare samples for storage, submission to in-house laboratory or shipment to outside facilities. Collect and organize data appropriately. The research associate is expected to use a company vehicle to transport specimens, supplies, or reagents as needed.
  • 15% Assist with maintenance and operation of data acquisition equipment including mechanical testing, gait analysis, and image capture systems.
  • 10% Schedule, organize, and perform or assist in medical and surgical procedures including patient restraint and preparation, anesthesia, appropriate set up and preparation for sterile surgical procedures, administration of medications, collection and processing of specimens, and patient recovery and aftercare. Provide veterinary care to post- operative patients independently with consultation with the PI. Teach and supervise trainees on the same procedures.
  • 10% Data management for numerous simultaneous projects, including data collection as well as development of computerized data recording, measuring, and retrieval systems. Statistical analysis of research data. Participate in and provide training in complex computer programs necessary to analyze data and run equipment. Teach and supervise trainees on the same programs and processes.
  • 10% Assist in the preparation, writing and routing of research proposals and scientific manuscripts. Contribute publication quality procedure and results descriptions, and images for manuscripts, abstracts, and proposals.
  • 10% Perform medical record and scientific literature searches independently. Other duties as assigned.

Bachelor's with 2 years of experience

Research Associate 4 (part- time or full- time)
The research associate 4 is the laboratory manager for the Laboratory for Equine and Comparative Orthopedic Research in the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. Under the direction of the principal investigator, the individual is responsible for the scientific operations of the laboratory, including supervision of laboratory personnel. They manage and maintain all equipment, reagents, and supplies for planned and ongoing projects. They are responsible for all records associated with reagents, supplies, and equipment. The individual plans, organizes, and conducts highly independent research upon approval of the principal investigator including designing tests and evaluating methods and protocols, and recommending purchase of new equipment. They analyze, summarize, and organize collected data, and together with the principle investigator, publish results of investigations in professional journals.   • 20% Supervises all laboratory personnel including post-doctoral researchers, graduate students, student workers, house officers and visiting scientists, including records management and charts of all projects underway in the laboratory.
  • 20% Designs and implements research protocols; designs safety procedures. Researches new products, tests, and methodological instruments and reports to the principal investigator relative to feasibility, quality, and benefits of such new developments. Adapts procedures or methods relative to changes in research projects.
  • 20% Devises methods for testing in the laboratory. Performs specialized and complex experiments in such areas as molecular biology, cell culture, animal surgery, and examination of specimens. Responsible for scheduling team laboratory projects with principle investigator. Manages all plans for and assists with surgery. Manages all post-operative care under direction principle investigator.
  • 20% Manages and maintains all equipment, reagents, and supplies, including accurate inventories. Responsible for laboratory maintenance, upkeep, safety, and cleanliness according to good laboratory practices standards. Calibrates, set up, and repairs laboratory equipment. Operates sensitive and highly complex laboratory equipment and/or perform computer applications.
  • 20% Maintains highly detailed records of the stages of development of tests and the final results thereof. Collates and analyzes complex data. Maintains computer database. Summarizes completed protocols and studies; prepares presentations, and writes abstracts and manuscripts for publication. Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
Master's with 1-2 years of experience
Specific Experience: Cell culture, molecular biology, data analysis, scientific writing, animal husbandry, laboratory management and scheduling
Preferred Qualifications:
DVM or Ph.D. with 3 years of experience
Preferred Certifications/Licenses:
DVM or equivalent
Special or Physical Qualifications (ALL LEVELS) :
Required to be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds, standing or walking for prolonged periods, able to reach above and below the shoulder, vision (near sight), vision (far sight), kneel or sit on the floor, push/pulling, grasping, climbing, sitting, and/or bending
Vehicle Operation -University employees whose principal responsibilities of employment include operating a vehicle, performing maintenance on a vehicle, or supervising any public employee who operates or maintains a vehicle and positions with an expectation to travel will require an MVR and are subject to drug screens per PM-33/PS-67/FASOP HR-04.
