Loudoun County School District is Hiring a Hearing Officer Near Ashburn, VA

Position Overview

The Hearing Officer hears appeals from the school level and renders decisions, in conjunction with the Director of School Administration; coordinates and conducts long-term suspensions, pre-expulsion, readmission, exclusion, placement, criminal reassignment and dispositions activities; leads in supporting, with an equity lens, intervention approaches and programs, providing recommendations and resolutions for students; and prepares related documentation for the school board.


Roles and Responsibilities

The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate:

  • Conducts administrative hearings, working to ensure a prompt, thorough, and equitable process for all parties
  • Reviews discipline cases and appeals to ensure completeness and documentation submitted, including due process measures and compliance with all local, state, and federal programs, laws, and guidelines related to student discipline
  • Partners proactively with school administrators on disciplinary issues to identify and engage in resolutions that minimize student suspension and expulsion and focus on individuation of circumstances
  • Prepares and/or coordinates reports and analyses related to discipline to identify and interpret trends or patterns in data sets that provide key insights into future program initiatives and staff professional development
  • Renders decisions on cases and communicates decisions in writing to all involved parties, which may include a recommendation to the school board for expulsion
  • Collaborates with the Title IX office to ensure compliance with such matters
  • Provides leadership in planning, developing, and implementing Student Behavior Administrative Responses
  • Develops and facilitates staff and administrator training on investigations and searches within schools


Qualifications

Below are the minimum qualifications for this job. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are also acceptable.

Education Master’s degree


Experience

Six (6) years of experience in teaching, supervision, and administration; experience working in a setting with a diverse population; experience with interventions/strategies that promote positive student behavior


Licenses and Certifications

Postgraduate educational license with endorsement in school administration


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, and current trends of school administration
  • Knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations related to Title IX, student behavior and conduct, rights, and responsibilities, the disciplinary appeal process, and equity issues
  • Understanding of issues of equity and disproportionality in discipline
  • Ability to manage a division-wide appeals process, conduct administrative hearings, and prepare documentation for school board
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with school-based staff, department staff, families, and citizens
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

Salary Level: Universal 23

Salary Scale: lcps.org/compensation

Salary Range: 107,056 to 170,603
