The Los Angeles Review of Books (LARB) is looking for a full-time Managing Editor. This role is central to running the daily operations of both the online and print magazine.
The Managing Editor would work closely with the editor-in-chief as well as the rest of LARB’s editorial team to shape LARB’s editorial vision, assigning and editing pieces for the website as well as the LARB Quarterly Journal. The Managing Editor would also work closely with section editors to manage pitches, schedule pieces, and make sure everything was ready for copyediting and production. The ME would be responsible for coordinating with the designer, art director and printer in producing the Quarterly.
As a 501(c)(3) literary arts nonprofit, LARB publishes a daily online magazine, a quarterly journal, holds events, runs the LARB Publishing Workshop, offers internships, and conducts a variety of other programs. This role will work closely with LARB’s senior leadership, assisting and taking part in all of LARB’s programming, participating in events, fund drives, and workshops.
Previous editorial and managerial experience highly encouraged. Salary commensurate with experience and qualification.
Following are the primary responsibilities of the Managing Editor to be carried out under the supervision of the Editor-in-Chief.
• Participate on editorial team in content planning and editorial direction, for both LARB website and LARB Quarterly Journal.
• Manage production of online magazine, including soliciting and coordinating input and assignments from multiple editors, and providing clear communication about the calendar.
• Assign and acquire pieces.
• Assist in website production and calendaring.
• Conduct line editing, copyediting, and other editorial tasks as needed.
• Manage layout, production and printing of the Quarterly.
• Strategize subscriptions, distribution and membership plans.
• Coordinate between editorial team and other LARB Programming (events, workshops, podcasts etc.)
• Perform such other duties as may be required or requested.
