DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

Los Angeles Harbor College is accepting applications for a tenure-track, 35-hour week Counselor position at our campus starting Fall 2023 Academic School Year.

Under the direction of the Department Chairperson and the Vice President of Student Services, the Guided Pathways counselor will be responsible for helping guide students through their chosen major and providing comprehensive academic, career, transfer, and personal counseling to a diverse student population within a Guided Pathways framework. The Counselor will participate in orientation, liaison duties with academic departments, classroom presentations, and workshops. As part of our state initiated Guided Pathways efforts, the General counselor will be an integral part as this position must integrate collaboratively and skillfully with campus units not only in Student Services but also Academic Affairs.

This position may require assignments in the evenings, weekends, or at off campus locations including online counseling services.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE

Los Angeles Harbor College (LAHC) is one of nine colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), the largest community college district in the United States. It is located in Wilmington, CA (near San Pedro, the Port of LA) and has an enrollment of approximately 10,000 students. LAHC offers a wide range of academic and career technical educational programs, and transfers students to leading private and public colleges and universities.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent;
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and familiarity with issues related to student equity.

NOTE: A Bachelor’s degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three years or more of recent (within the past five years) paid work experience, post master's degree, as a counselor in a California Community College.
  • Knowledge and ability to use computers, technology and relevant software tools, applications, websites and resources in providing academic advisement services (e.g., SIS, assist.org, C-ID, TES, eLumen, Cranium Café, Canvas, Starfish, etc.).
  • Be able to evaluate external coursework and exams and determine its applicability to our curricular programs (i.e., how such courses or exams can be used as a prerequisite or co-requisite, earn credit towards local degree, ADTs, certificates, and transfer to our local universities such as the CSU, UC and private institutions).
  • Experience teaching, coordinating, onboarding, and transfer process at a community college.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

DUTIES include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist students from diverse and socio-economic backgrounds in choosing and planning immediate and long-range educational goals, including developing abbreviated and comprehensive student education plans
  • Provide assistance to students experiencing academic and/or personal difficulties and make referrals to on and off-campus resources as appropriate
  • Provide in person and online academic, transfer, career, and personal counseling in the Counseling department and other assigned areas as part of Guided Pathways and other initiatives.
  • Conduct in-person and online college orientations and presentations for incoming new students and continuing students.
  • Ability to teach Counseling courses to include academic, personal, and/or career planning and decision-making skills.
  • Participate in professional development, curriculum development, program review, and the development and assessment of student learning and/or service area outcomes at the course and department level.
  • Maintain current knowledge in subject matter area (certificate, degree and transfer requirements) and effective student support strategies/interventions.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Counseling Department Chair and/or the Dean of Counseling.


SALARY AND BENEFITS

The basic salary range is from $79,464 to $123,720 based upon experience and professional preparation. The doctoral differential is $5,016 per year. Benefits include paid holidays, medical, dental and vision care plans, and a $50,000 group life policy.
