Los Alamos Public Schools is Hiring a School Counselor Mountain Posting 125 Near Los Alamos, NM

SUMMARY: Utilizes leadership, advocacy, and collaboration with students, staff and parents to
promote student success in academics, career, and personal/social development. The
Elementary School Counselor is responsible for implementing a developmental and
comprehensive school counseling program that responds to student needs and addressed the
skills necessary for life and work in the twenty first century. The majority of the elementary
school counselor’s duties involve direct and indirect services through the school core curriculum,
individual planning and preventive and responsive services with approximately 20% of the
counselor’s time spent in program management, system support, and accountability activities.

Direct/Indirect Services:

  •  Provide individual and group counseling to student with identified concerns and needs
  •  Plan lessons and deliver developmentally appropriate school counseling core curriculum lessons.
  •  Consult and collaborate effectively with parents, teachers, administrators, and other
     educational/community resources.
  •  Implement an effective referral and follow-up process as needed.
  • Advocate for student success through 504, IEP, SAT, or other forums.
  • Provide crisis intervention and support.

Program Management/System Support/Accountability

  •  Participate in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills
  •  Monitor student academic performance, behavior, and attendance and facilitate appropriate interventions.
  •  Use available technology resources to enhance the school counseling program
  •  Assist teachers and parents in interpreting and understanding student data
  •  Serve as Site Test Coordinator for annual state-mandated testing
  •  Demonstrate knowledge of legal, ethical, and professional school counseling issues K-6
