Los Alamos Public Schools is Hiring a Route Bus Driver Posting 119 Near Los Alamos, NM

School Bus Driver- To transport students safely and on time to and from schools, activity trips, sporting events and other sanctioned activities; to monitor and ensure the mechanical safety and cleanliness of an assigned vehicle and to report any potentially hazardous situations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS

The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here:

  • Provide safe and timely transport to and from school, activity trips, sporting events and other sanctioned activities for faculty and students as required.
  • Operate a school bus in heavy traffic and under all weather conditions in an assigned area.
  • Monitor and ensure the mechanical safety and cleanliness of an assigned vehicle and report any potentially hazardous situations as needed.
  • Perform routine inspection of an assigned vehicle including safety checks, sweeping, mopping, washing and fueling the vehicle as required; check and maintain fluid levels; report problems or equipment malfunctions.
  • Maintain good order among students on the bus following District policies regarding the disciplining of children.
  • Attend safety and other meetings regarding school bus driving and maintenance as required.
  • Follow all safety rules and procedures established for work area.
  • Maintain records of all trips; file accident reports when necessary.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

QUALIFICATIONS- Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of school bus operations and maintenance.
  • Principles and applications of traffic and weather safety.
  • Methods and operations of cleaning and maintaining assigned vehicles.
  • City geography and heavy traffic areas.
  • Basic first aid practices.
  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Pertinent federal, state, and local codes, laws and regulations.

Ability to:

  • Obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and Department of Transportation physical.
  • Maintain order among students in a school bus.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required.
  • Perform duties relating to the routine maintenance of a school bus including cleaning, maintenance, and fueling as required.
  • Operate a school bus safely and efficiently in heavy traffic and in all weather conditions; recognize malfunctions in equipment and take appropriate action.
  • Work independently with little direction.
  • Meet emergency situations in accordance with operating procedures.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE GUIDELINES

Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.including supplemental training in the operations and safety of a motor vehicle.

Experience: Will train and test for licensing individuals who do not currently have a CDL. One year increasingly responsible experience in the operations and maintenance of commercial passenger vehicles is highly desireable.

License or Certificate:

Possession of or ability to obtain a CDL, class B New Mexico driver’s license with appropriate endorsements. Meet qualifications as stated in the New Mexico Standards of School Bus Operations. Ability to complete First Aid/CPR certificate and Defensive Driving certificate.

Work Year: 198 days, hourly, schedule determined by route assignment. Evenings and weekends when driving an activity bus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS and WORKING CONDITIONS

The physical demands herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential job functions.

Environment: School Bus transportation environment; extensive contact with students; exposure to potentially hazardous situations as well as noise, dust, grease, fumes, gases; incumbents are required to operate a motor vehicle in heavy traffic and under adverse weather conditions.

Mobility: Essential and marginal functions may require physical condition necessary for sitting for prolonged periods of time; moderate or light lifting; standing, bending, reaching, climbing; motorized equipment and vehicles.

Vision: vision sufficient to read small print, road signs and other printed documents.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND DEMANDS

Frequency: In the sections that follow, the frequency categories are defined as follows:

Occasionally = 1-33% of the normal workday or class of actions

Frequently = 34-66% of the normal workday or class of actions

Continuously = 67-100% of the normal workday or class of actions

A. DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION PHYSICAL- Ability to pass and maintain Department of Transportation Commercial Driver’s License physical. 

B. WORKING POSITIONS, POSTURES AND SKILLS

  9. Crawling - Occasionally (check tires, etc.)

$24.01 Starting Hourly Rate

198 work contract- July 31, 2023 to June 7, 2024
