Los Alamos Public Schools is Hiring an Elementary Prevention Support Specialist Near Los Alamos, NM

SUMMARY:

Under the guidance of the Prevention Program Coordinator, leads the implementation of prevention programs at the elementary school level and works directly with school staff, youth, and families to provide education, support, and resources.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
.

  • Coordinates the development, implementation and evaluation of K-6 prevention programs and services within LAPS and in the community.
  • Assesses existing resources and prevention related subject areas in order to develop a plan and select supplementary materials for elementary prevention education.
  • Works directly with school staff, LAPS students, and community youth and their families or guardian(s) to provide age-appropriate programs and resources designed to build resiliency and increase protective factors in order to reduce risk-taking behaviors.
  • Coordinates prevention outreach and education for families including the promotion of monthly themes
  • Utilizes the School Board Strategic Plan and the Prevention Program Strategic Plan as a guide.
  • Listens and considers comments and suggestions from school Principals.
  • Collaborates with site administrators and school counselors regarding the needs of students and provides students and their families with education, support, and resources.
  • Works with staff and school programs to ease the transition between school sites and increase school engagement.
  • Serves as a resource and support person for site prevention efforts.
  • Serves on district committees that are appropriate to prevention efforts.
  • Provides resources and support to staff implementing Community Resource Support Plans, as needed.
  • Assists with the administration of district youth risk and resiliency surveys.
  • Completes and maintains appropriate documentation and recordkeeping required for prevention programs and student support.
  • Submits monthly updates detailing programs and services to be included in reports to Los Alamos County and other funding entities, as needed.
  • Collaborates with various youth serving organizations including but not limited to: Family Strengths Network, the Juvenile Justice Advisory Board, and the Youth Activity Centers.
  • Supports the coordination of collaborative prevention-related programs/ events/ activities with other youth serving community organizations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Prevention Program Coordinator.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelors Degree or higher. Degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Health, or related field is preferred.
  • Three years experience in prevention programming or related field, or other comparable experience.
  • Professional coursework or training in prevention programming. Preference given to candidates willing to commit to obtaining certification as a Certified Prevention Specialist within the first three years of employment.
  • Experience working with youth in school or community setting is preferred.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Prevention Program Coordinator may find acceptable.


LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to effectively present information to administrators, public groups/community, and the LAPS School Board.


TECHNICAL SKILLS:


  • Demonstrated ability to utilize technology for implementing and maintaining a prevention program.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in use of Word, PowerPoint and Excel.


OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in a specific field.
  • Ability to evaluate programs and activities and implement changes to assure continuous improvement and program effectiveness.
  • Ability to maintain files and documentation of programs and activities and meet required deadlines.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and Board of Education policies.
