The Earth and Environmental Sciences Division provides multidisciplinary Earth science solutions to complex problems in global security, sustainable energy, and climate and environmental change. The division maintains on-site facilities and deploys globally cutting-edge laboratories to research Earth system impacts and emerging threats and provides critical assessments and knowledge to support national security missions and decisions. The Laboratory's Public Affairs Group is responsible for communication with employees and the media through a diverse portfolio of communications products and services designed to engage and educate audiences. Your mission in this position will be to support this critical and exciting work with top-notch communications - employee-facing news articles, web content, media releases, social media, event support, and more. Communications Specialist 1 ($63,200 - $99,000)At the Communications Specialist 1 level, you will be expected to produce communication products such as employee-facing news articles, external webpage updates, feature stories and newsletters under supervision and with editing support. You may also be asked to assist with planning and producing materials for conferences, recruiting events, and meetings, including helping to design brochures, posters, and exhibits. The minimum requirements to be hired at this level include a bachelor's degree and at least two years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
What You Need Minimum Job Requirements:Communication Planning & ExecutionWe are looking for a great writer with excellent judgment, able to meet deadlines, and comfortable writing and editing content on a variety of topics and creating products ranging from news and features stories to web content and newsletters.
Audience-Centered Communication You will need an interest in communicating technical information with diverse audiences (gender, age, experience, background, etc.)
Collaboration & customer serviceYou will need to be a strong listener and collaborator who is able to work gracefully with multiple stakeholders and provide excellent customer service.
Education/ExperienceYou will need a bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related field and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.
Desired Qualifications:Specialized experienceExperience working in the fields related to the Earth and Environmenal Sciences Division - such as Earth science, sustainable energy, climate change, and global security - will set you apart from other candidates.
Web-Based & Multimedia ContentIt is a plus if you have experience creating multimedia content (photos, podcast, video, and infographics) for web-based stories and basic familiarity with a web-based content management systems.
Marketing Material Planning and DesignExperience writing for multiple social media platforms, especially with social media marketing, would be helpful in this position as would experience producing conference materials such as posters and exhibits.
