PRIMARY PURPOSE

Dental Hygienists coordinate and provide optimal services to clinic patients, with a special focus on preventative care, under the direct supervision of the Dentist. They perform basic dental care tasks primarily focused on keeping the patient’s teeth and gums healthy and clean. The Dental Hygienist also educates patients and their care givers on proper dental hygiene practices and techniques. All care and services are provided in accordance with LCH&D’s philosophy of “partnership” with patients while integrating its values of Respect, Quality, Compassion and Hope.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Review patient’s oral history. 
  • Elicit relevant information from patients/ patient’s caregiver regarding current or prior conditions or ailments. 
  • Elicit relevant information from patients/ patient’s caregiver regarding their lifestyle and behavior. 
  • Perform thorough oral cleanings, debridement, scaling, and root planning.
  • Examine oral cavity for signs of disease, trauma, and neglect. 
  • Place sealants. 
  • Perform routine checkups and screenings. 
  • Educate patients and their caregivers on recommended techniques to improve and maintain good oral health.
  • Take and develop x-ray images of teeth and mouth as needed.
  • Must maintain accurate records. 
  • Comply with HIPAA guidelines as all times
  •  Must maintain infection control standards at all times per organization policy. 
  • Must have knowledge of the LCH&D Continuous Quality Improvement Plan and be guided by its goals and objectives in carrying out the role of Dental Hygienist. 
  • Must demonstrate clinical competence in all areas of assigned job functions.
  • Provide input and recommendations to enhance the growth and success of the organization.
  • Make every attempt to meet daily goals and objectives as defined by the organization. 
  • Participate in Peer Review. 
  • Assume all other reasonable duties and responsibilities as directed by the organization's leadership. 
  • It is the responsibility of every employee to ensure that executive management is made aware of any issues that could negatively impact the organization or its relationships with patients, and the community. Also to report any and all violations and infractions against the organization's vision, mission, and values.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have Dental Hygiene degree and must be licensed to practice hygiene in the State of Ohio. 
  • Must maintain the appropriate continuing education requirements as established by the State Board of Dental Examiners. 
  • Must have BLS certification.

SKILL AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • A minimum of three years of hygiene experience in a non-profit community healthcare environment is preferred. 
  • Must have valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record. 
  • Must have proficient computer skills and the ability to become proficient in software programs specific to LCH&D i.e. NextGen, EPM, EHR, etc.
  • Must have the skill and credibility to serve as a patient advocate and be a role model for change.
  • Ability to maintain a calm and professional demeanor and communicate enthusiastically with patients. 
  • Ability to be responsive in working with a culturally-diverse patient population.
  • Must have excellent communication skills with the ability to master a therapeutic communication approach.
  • Ability to independently coordinate multiple tasks. 
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others. 
  • Bilingual Spanish speaking is a plus.
