Here’s a short-term opportunity to hone your skills as a recreational test fisher and sampler who performs advanced technical scientific duties for recreational steelhead fisheries in Western Washington streams.

With your insight and experience ,

You will work under minimal supervision and with the team to evaluate recreational fisheries management strategies, assess biological information by stock, and report on subsequent achievement of spawning escapements.

You will perform a variety of fishing methods on rivers from the shore and on watercraft like pontoons, drift boats and rafts.

Some of the key duties of the Recreational Steelhead Test Fishing & Sampling Technician include :

Test fishing and surveys in streams for steelhead fisheries :

  • Use a variety of recreational fishing methods (e.g., bobber, lure, jig, fly).
  • Operate single-person pontoon boats and multi-person drift boats and rafts, including trailering and navigating up to Class III whitewater in all types of weather conditions.
  • Perform minor routine maintenance on the boats, trailer, and test fishing equipment.
  • Operate GPS and electronic data collection devices.
  • Collect biological data on steelhead catch to obtain stock composition (DNA), age structure (scales), length information (legal and sublegal proportions) and hatchery / natural-origin (mark-status) proportions.
  • Ensure data is accurately recorded, summarized, and if necessary uploaded to database.
  • Work collaboratively with private guide boats to help ensure accurate emulation of guided fishery.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work Setting, including hazards :
  • Conduct work in adverse weather and environmental conditions including noise, odors, walking on slippery surfaces, biting, and stinging insects.
  • Repetitive movements of hands, finger manipulations, long periods of sitting, squatting, and walking through vegetation and in uneven terrain in and near streams and rivers, climbing in and out of boats, carrying, kneeling, and frequent heavy lifting (up to 40 lbs.

unassisted) of containers of fish, working and standing in confined space.

  • Hiking up to 6 miles a day or boating up to 10 miles a day in streams and off trail over rough and slippery terrain.
  • Boating may include navigating up to class III whitewater.
  • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
  • Snorkeling in cold, fast-flowing / whitewater conditions, in varying environmental conditions, up to 5 miles a day.

Schedule :

  • 40 hours per week, with varying schedules Sunday through Saturday, including holidays,between 5 : 00 a.m. and 11 : 00 p.m., Overtime required.
  • Must be able to work variable days with shifts up to 12 hours early morning to late night.
  • Schedules can vary by week; weather conditions and other emergency situations often result in last minute schedule changes.

Travel Requirements :

This position requires a considerable amount of driving 50 to 100 miles per day, four to five days per week and often during winter weather conditions on state, federal, county roads, and on private (logging) roads.

May require shuttling State vehicles between Forks, Montesano, and Olympia, WA.

May be required to use personal-use vehicle with mileage reimbursement.

Tools and Equipment :

  • Fishing rods and associated tackle, iPad, electronic sampling equipment, Coded Wire Tag (CWT) detector, knives, forceps, head lamp, measuring board, tally counter, totes / bins, paper forms, labels, scale cards, pencils, pens, clipboard, and scissors.
  • WDFW provided apparel including gloves, rain gear and rubber boots / waders / hip boots, certain branded apparel (e.g. : Hats) andPersonal Flotation Device (PFD) as needed.

Customer Interactions :

  • Requires strong communication skills, diplomacy and a high-level of customer service for daily interactions and information sharing with a wide range of people including Tribal members, anglers, colleagues, and the public.
  • Acts as liaison to regional supervisor and enforcement team regarding fishery violations observed in the field.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications :

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science and two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.
  • Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science and two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

Please note :

College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six (6) semester units or nine (9) quarter units of natural science classes.

Professional and volunteer experience involving biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural resources, engineering, or closely allied fields may substitute, year for year, for experience.

Certifications / Licenses :

Valid driver’s license.

Preferred / Desired Qualifications :

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all the following :

  • Twelve (12) months or more of recreational steelhead or salmon fishing experience in freshwater streams.
  • Twelve (12) months or more of experience safely operating non-motorized single-person pontoons boats, drift boats, or rafts in up to Class III whitewater.
  • Ability to identify saltwater and river stage adult salmonids to species.
  • Experience conducting creel surveys.
  • Excellent attention to detail and good communication skills.
  • Experience working with members of the public.

Special Requirements / Conditions of Employment :

  • Successful completion of agency training and / or certification for assigned watercraft dependent on supervisory direction, position need andtraining availability.
  • Successful completion of First Aid / CPR within 6 months of hire.
  • Successful completion of WDFW snorkel training and certification, with completion within 6 months of hire and renewal expected annually.
