Job Summary: The Clinical Nurse A-Inpatient, is a Graduate Nurse with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing that has completed all requirements of phase I of the Loma Linda University Medical Center RN Residency Program (RNRP) designed to meet the needs of new graduates and inexperienced nurses as they transition into the role of a competent, successful nurse at LLUMC, a tertiary care facility with multiple specialty fields of nursing. Working under the guidance of the RN preceptor, the Clinical Nurse A - Inpatient demonstrates increasing independence performing the nursing process (assessment, care planning, intervention, evaluation) and learns effective and efficient supervision of and delegation to unlicensed staff. Refines decision-making skills and effectively utilizes discretion and independent judgment to provide, coordinate and document direct and indirect age-specific and developmentally appropriate quality patient-centered care in accordance with LLUMC's established Professional Practice Model (Duffy's Quality Caring Theory). Applies basic theoretical concepts to clinical practice and continually expands knowledge base and clinical skills with a focus in area of specialty. Contributes to nursing excellence and embraces new knowledge, innovations and improvements in practice to enhance the patient experience and clinical outcomes. Utilizes interpersonal skills to maximize patient satisfaction, safe patient care and professionalism. Develops skills to contribute to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse workforce and patient population. May be required to participate in on-call rotation based on department business needs. The Clinical Nurse-A is eligible to promote to Clinical Nurse-B classification after one year experience. Performs other duties as needed.
Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required. Successful completion of phase 1 of the RN Residency program required. No clinical experience required. After one year experience as a Clinical Nurse A, employee is eligible to promote to Clinical Nurse B classification when criteria in the Clinical Nurse Ladder handbook and job specifications outlined in the Clinical Nurse-B job description are met.
Knowledge and Skills: Demonstrates basic competencies in clinical nursing. Ability to apply theoretical concepts to clinical practice and continually expands knowledge base and clinical skills with a focus in area of specialty. Basic knowledge of healthcare regulations and accreditation required. Exhibit professional behavior at all times. Able to: speak, read and write legibly in English (and Spanish preferred) with professional quality; use computer, printer and software programs necessary to the position, e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, electronic medical record, electronic event reporting program; troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment; perform technical patient care activities; relate and communicate positively, effectively and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and/or enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; teach, collaborate; accept direction; think critically; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math and statistical functions; manage multiple patient assignments effectively; organize and prioritize workload; work well under pressure; problem solve; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records and written documents necessary to position; discern temperature variances through touch.
Licensures and Certifications: Active California Registered Nurse (RN) license required. Basic Life Support certification issued by the American Heart Association required. Other certifications required as listed in the department-specific Plan for Providing Care.
