POSITION: School Van Driver

LOCATION: Claymont, DE

REPORTS TO: Transportation Manager

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1.Be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid license for at least one year.

2.Must complete 1 days of school bus aide classroom training.

3.If licensed in Delaware less than 5 years, provide driving record from all other state(s) in which you were licensed for the past 5- years.

4.If licensed in another state, provide 5-year driving record from home state, complete school bus aide training, and meet all other requirements (annual physical, TB tests, drug screening, background check, etc.).

5.No more than 3 points on Motor Vehicle Record.

6.No conviction for Driving Under Influence of Alcohol or Drugs, or suspension, revocation, or license disqualification for moving violations, in the past five years. Never convicted of a drug related crime.

7.Never convicted of a Class A or Class B felony. Felony based on causing death, felony sexual offense, or felony against public administration (bribery, etc.).

8.Must not have had any portion of the sentence for any other felony conviction extending into the last five years.

9.Never convicted of any crime against a child.

10.Must not have ever been convicted of any drug-related crime.

11.Must pass a successful pre-employment drug screening test;

12.Must pass a successful background check including child protection registry. Child protection registry check (from state of residence);

13.Criminal background affidavit;

14.State Bureau of Investigation fingerprinting for state and Federal Bureau of Investigation criminal background checks;

15.Must have TB testing (initially) and school bus driver physical (initially and annually).

16.School van driver physical (initially and annually).

17.Must be trained and complete training by a Certified Trainer.

18.Previous employer verification and work history of all driver positions in past 10 years. (if applicable)

DUTIES: Drives any type and size of van that may be operated for the Safe transport of students to and from school and school related functions on regularly scheduled routes.

STARTING DATE: Mutually agreeable date

MONTHS OF EMPLOYMENT: 10-month position

Employment is conditional upon receipt of an acceptable criminal background report, a negative pre-employment drug screening and a child abuse registry check showing you are not on the registry at any level.

Performance Responsibilities

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

·Regular attendance is an essential function of the position.

·Report to work as scheduled or before in order to prepare the bus and start the route on time regardless of weather conditions.

·Meet the requirements of the regular daily van route for the purpose of transporting children to and from school in a safe and timely fashion.

·Operates assigned school van on assigned trips in accordance with printed trip schedules and in accordance with specified stop, sequence, and time schedules.

·Complete safety and operational check of the school van and any special equipment before all trips. Report any malfunctions concerning the bus and/or special equipment.

·Boards, transports, and discharges passengers. 

·Responsibility to maintain and rigidly adhere to the van route schedule for both pickup and return home

·May lift handicapped passengers and assist passengers into and out of van as required by Company policy and procedure. 

·May operate a mechanized wheelchair lift. 

·Ensure that students and equipment are safely fastened in seats, when necessary.

·Maintains and updates current student and trip routes. 

·Responsibility to report any hazardous conditions observed along the scheduled bus route and route deviations

·Monitors the operational condition and safety of vehicle accessories of assigned buses on a daily basis; monitors gauges and sensors while operating a van and reports discrepancies to initiate corrective actions, i.e.; i.e. seatbelts, fluid kits, first aid kits, etc. 

·Practices non-aggressive, defensive driving techniques.

·Monitors, conducts, and responds to communications with the Transportation Operations staff via two-radio. (if applicable)

·Maintains effective professional working relationships with pupils, parents, and district staff. 

·Responsibility to be courteous, pleasant and demonstrate respect for all students, school personnel, parents and the general motoring public.

·Be fair and firm with discipline of your passengers and be mindful of the safety of student riders when they are approaching, entering, riding and leaving the van

·Enforces district policy and procedure in maintaining discipline on vans. 

·Knowledge of rules pertaining to the transportation of schoolchildren with responsibility to advise the students on the van of the rules and the infractions.

·Renders first aide to passengers on an emergency basis. 

·Maintains working knowledge of and complies with laws and regulations pertaining to pupil transportation. 

·Maintains cleanliness of windows and interior of van on a daily basis; may include wash bus exterior.

·Ensures familiarity with assigned trips before transporting passengers; may dry-run new trips. 

·Periodically participates in mandated meetings and in-service programs during traditional and non-traditional workdays and work hours as required by the department. 

·Maintains and supports standards of personal conduct and discipline in accordance with the current discipline policy.

·Follow all State and Federal rules and regulations. Adherence to the procedures, policies, and practices presented in the “School Bus Drivers’/Aides’ Handbook.”

·Responsibility to immediately report unusual incidents or events and to follow the directions provided by the Dispatcher.

·Performs other duties reasonably related to the Van Driver position.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

·Applicants must possess a valid Driver’s License. 

·Applicants must operate all types, makes, models and sizes of school vans safely and on a specific time schedule in varied and complex topographical, weather, urban traffic, and rural conditions. 

·Applicants must be able to exit from the rear of the van to assist in emergency evacuations. 

·Communicate effectively and maintain cooperative relationships. 

·Show personality and character traits suited to supervision and care of children of multiple ethnicities and cultural values, behavioral, and physical handicaps. 

·Resolve conflict and maintain discipline of children on board vans. 

·Read and interpret maps, compass directions, schedules, student rosters and procedural instructions. 

·Rapidly learn routes and the operations of equipment related to duties.
