The Direct Support Professional will actively participate as members of a team supporting individuals with developmental disabilities in activities that make their day meaningful.
Requirements
Essential Functions
- Provides a positive environment for individuals participating in The Studios at LOGAN (ADS) that allows learning and enjoyment of activities.
- Encourages individuals to be as independent as possible in their daily routine.
- Actively listens to individuals and encourages them to express their personal preferences and interests. Implements goals/objectives for individuals in service, collecting data and noting performance information daily.
- Initiates activities within the classroom and encourages individuals to participate in the activities.
- Assists individuals throughout the day including arrival/departure routines, meal preparation/clean-up, eating lunch, and personal care (including basic hygiene needs). Provide for dignity by assuring cleanliness of individuals and their belongings.
- Assists with positioning and transferring of individuals. Must be able to assist up to 50 lbs.
- Manage time efficiently to ensure completion of all necessary tasks and continuous active treatment for individuals in service. Take initiative to identify what needs to be done between scheduled tasks to ensure all time is used productively.
- Responds effectively to behavioral issues, proactively and reactively, to ensure safety and respect for all individuals.
- Welcomes families, residential providers, volunteers, and other visitors in the facility.
- Completes documentation as required, including incident reports, communication logs and goal and behavior data sheets.
- Effectively communicates progress and issues regarding individuals to supervisor and with other team members as needed.
- Ensures a safe and clean environment for individuals served by assisting housekeeping staff with necessary clean up.
- Administer medication as needed in accordance with agency policies. Training will be provided for staff assigned this responsibility.
- Facilitate integration into the community during day program hours by inviting others in and by supporting participants’ trips to community destinations. Transport individuals in personal and / or agency vehicles as assigned.
General Responsibilities
- Responsible for the health and safety of individuals served.
- Expected to serve as role model for individuals.
- Expected to serve as an advocate and to protect the human rights of individuals served.
- Expected to participate in training as required by your supervisor or for all LOGAN staff.
- Expected to demonstrate good judgement.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
Experience
- One year of experience required. Experience may include a combination of life experience and working with individuals with developmental disabilities.
Job Knowledge, Abilities, and Requirements
- A positive attitude to support individuals with disabilities.
- A willingness to learn and implement positive approaches to instruction and behavior support.
- Competent computer skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
- Ability to comply with all LOGAN training requirements and certifications.
