Overview

At LiveOnNY we save lives, provide comfort, and strengthen legacies through organ, eye and tissue donation for the 13 million New Yorkers we serve.

Responsible for advocating for organ and tissue Advanced Practice Family Support Advocate donation, supporting families, and acting as a resource and expert in authorization. Serves as the lead preceptor in the field to all new and experienced staff responsible for obtaining authorization for organ and tissue donation. Provides clinical support to facilitate the start of an organ case after authorization is obtained. Responds to organ donor referrals at area hospitals, assesses potential organ donors, evaluates organ function, collaborates closely with hospital staff to assess hospital plan for the potential donor. Supports and fosters the mission of the organization and its commitment to organ, eye, and tissue donation.

Responsibilities

  • Ability to perform all essential duties of a Family Services Advocate as required.
  • Provides ongoing support and guidance to Family Services and Clinical staff throughout the onboarding and orientation process.
  •  Identifies opportunities for improvement in field training in collaboration with Family & Clinical Services, as well as, the Education & Training departments.
  •  Assists Administrator On-Call (AOC) with authorization coaching calls and staff assignments.
  •  Provides input for staff reviews and evaluations through completion of orientation and ongoing.
  •  Maintains current knowledge of educational and training requirements as well as best practices for obtaining authorization for organ and tissue donation.
  •  Observes staff onsite to educate and assess mastery of job skills, provides written evaluations of trainee’s progress and serves as primary preceptor for onsite training.
  •  Responds onsite to referrals and assesses potential, determines neurological status, evaluates organ function and assists in establishing hospital plan of care for potential donors.
  •  Communicates with health care team members to obtain information regarding the potential donor’s hospital course and the family’s understanding of the current condition/prognosis. Completes appropriate documentation of donor evaluation in iTransplant and communicates to AOC & CMO as needed.
  •  Consults and collaborates with AOCs and hospital medical staff with starting orders for donor patients.
  •  Once authorization is obtained, sends bloodwork necessary to evaluate patient as a potential donor.
  •  Refers to each hospital’s Brain Death and DCD policies to assure processes are accurately followed.
  •  Communicates with Hospital Services staff to ensure smooth and accurate processes with our hospital partners.
  •  Completes all required annual training and continuing education for both Family and Clinical Services Departments.
  •  All employees, at every level, are empowered and expected to be committed to participate in continuous process improvement.
  •  Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • RN, Paramedic or BA/BS in counseling, psychology or social services, crisis intervention. Excellent knowledge of the dynamics of grief and bereavement. Experience in trauma/ critical care setting helpful. Minimum of 3 years’ experience as an FSA and at least one year at LiveOnNY. Minimum of one-year experience as a transplant coordinator or comparable work is preferred.
  • Ability to use a computer and project management software applications. Proven organizational, time management and team leadership skills. Ability to work independently and to meet project goals and objectives. Requires the exercise of considerable independent judgement and initiative. Requires flexibility and the ability to assess and change priorities quickly.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must own or have immediate access to a motor vehicle duly registered and insured by law.

Salary Range: $79,081 - $98,851 per year
