Little Leaf Farms is Hiring a Water Technical Systems Manager Near Shirley, MA

In this position, you will report directly to the Head Grower of the Devens Greenhouse and work closely with our diverse team of highly skilled growers and water technicians. The purpose of this position is to maintain and operate the water technical equipment and manage both shifts of the water tech. maintenance team to ensure optimal system performance. We use one of the most advanced horticultural climate control computers in the industry for a fully automated and data driven approach to operate and maintain these systems daily. This position is critical to the success of the greenhouse, in which every aspect of the growing cycle relies on the water technical systems. The Water Tech. Systems Manager will play a pivotal role by being available for all on call emergencies related to water tech. All systems are maintained and running 24 hours/day year-round, making this a demanding and challenging but rewarding position.

Work is self-guided, analytical and hands-on, involving learning and using state-of-the-art hydroponic technology to grow high-yielding, high quality lettuce for the East coast market. This position requires a can-do attitude, leadership capabilities, passion for learning, strong work ethic, sense of accountability, and desire to be an integral part of a small, close-knit team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of 5 technicians to provide 24-7-365 support to the Growing team with managing system alarms related to water tech. and climate control systems.
  • Equipment includes irrigation units, lights, fogging, sensors, roof washing/painting equipment, fans, boilers, and chillers.
  • Learn the role of a Water Tech. Specialist and understand the demands and knowledge required to do the job effectively.
  • Update, create, and maintain SOP’s for troubleshooting and maintaining systems.
  • Create comprehensive preventative maintenance plans and manage a tight PM schedule.
  • Create and maintain training programs to provide technicians with the knowledge and abilities required to run the water technical systems independently.
  • Install, maintain, modify, and repair simple to moderately complex PVC water systems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance (PMs) on cooling systems during summer months.
  • Ensure proper reading and calibration of pH and EC sensors.
  • Maintain records of water usage throughout the water system to ensure optimal water usage.
  • Expected to adhere to safe work practices, follow GMP and HACCP guidelines, maintain sanitary conditions and ensure that product quality is maintained.
  • Ensure proper fertilizer levels in all irrigation tanks.
  • Inspect greenhouse irrigation systems to ensure plants are being fed properly and repair leaks and other issues.
  • Work with Vendors to quote and install new systems as well as maintain existing systems.
  • Manage water tech. on-call scheduling and coordinate with Growing team.

The Water Tech. Systems Manager is ultimately responsible for all alarms in water tech systems and on-call for all emergencies that the Water Tech. Specialists cannot figure out. An on-call system will be developed with a rotation with the day shift technicians and Head grower for when the manager is on their days off. This system can be refined and altered once manager is sufficiently trained and overseeing technicians.

Qualifications and Competencies

2 years minimum work experience including the following:

  • Management/Leadership
  • Plumbing experience strongly preferred but not required.
  • Basic electrical diagnostics using a voltmeter and electrical schematics to troubleshoot problems.

High School Diploma/GED required; 2-year tech degree in related field strongly preferred.

Ability to read/interpret schematics (electrical and plumbing) and use a voltmeter, hand and power tools, etc.

Good communication and teaching skills, stress management, and sense of accountability; must be a responsible and reliable team player with a positive attitude, high level of maturity, and strong work ethic.

Must be well organized and can prioritize tasks.

Must be able to lift, carry and balance up to 75 lbs. (150 lbs. with assistance) with extreme care and caution when working with plants and products.

Ability to meet physical demands including reaching, climbing, bending, walking, standing, and performing repetitive work.

Comfortable working in conditions that include heights, heat, and high intensity lighting.

Use of Microsoft applications and ability to analyze data in Excel.
