Role

Under the direction of and reporting to the Thacker Pass Project Services Manager and working closely with the Lithium Americas Corp. Finance and Accounting team, the Cost Manager will provide estimating and cost engineering support to the Owners team staff. The Cost Manager will be required to produce a monthly project report that contains the analysis, bar charts, logic diagrams, and other graphs and lists that effectively communicate the cost plans and forecast of the overall project. The Cost Manager should have an in-depth knowledge of both applicable software programs, including SAP and principals of budgeting and cost engineering. The Cost Manager will have responsibility for the overall project schedule and tracking of the project budget. This position focuses on medium to large-scale mining and chemical projects and requires experience in the heavy construction field, preferably chemical industry or mining, and knowledge of project management practices.

The position will be located in the Reno, NV, business office, with frequent travel to the Winnemucca office and project site will be required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide project control support to the Owner s project management and corporate finance teams which includes project estimating, cost reporting, account reconciliation, project status reports and various other project related activities.
  • Ability to supervise several direct staff reports in the performance of the Project Control department requirements.
  • Validate reports and data prepared by the EPCM groups prior to submission; Closely monitor the progress of engineering and construction to ensure deliverables, productivity, expended hours, forecasts to go and resources employed, are accurately and realistically stated.
  • Analyze, interpret and report financial and cost information including variances, trends, and irregularities; inform project management of potential problem areas and recommend solutions to cost impacts and delays.
  • Collect project information, update, and produce monthly management reports that include Actual vs. Budget; Contingency usage; Dollars Committed; and Forecast.
  • Review scope changes, trends and change notices initiated from the project and review their time and cost implications, including those initiated by the EPCM groups.
  • Ability to work with the project staff to ensure the objectives of the project are timely met.
  • Communicate status of cost trends, and objectives to project management.
  • Apply and maintain cost procedures.
  • Evaluate and forecast costs and work progress.
  • Ability to determine the cost of all engineering and construction activities including labor, equipment, and materials.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and interface with various Project Managers in an engineering office environment or construction field office.
  • Demonstrate skills in handling assigned activities, teamwork, communications, and problem solving.
  • Assist in controlling expenditures to allow projects activities to stay on schedule and on budget.
  • Recommend changes to EPCM and Owner s Teamwork methodologies, including the review of contractor s work interface issues, as needed.
  • Assist with the preparation of project weekly and monthly reports.
  • Implement the Work Breakdown and Project Coding Structures to ensure that data are recorded correctly in the company financial system.
  • Oversight of project delivery performance relative to Project Cost and Risk versus project Baselines and application of effective project controls practices by Engineering and Construction Contractor teams.
  • Reviews all Project Changes in accordance with the approved Change Management Procedure.
  • Provide proactive cost and risk management input during all Project Phases to support an optimized project configuration for all project scope of work and agree on the cost, and risk baselines.
  • Oversee project delivery performance against Project Cost Baselines and ensure the application of appropriate project controls practice.
  • Liaise with Procurement, Sourcing or Contracts department providing support on the development, documentation, review and awarding of RFPs, purchase orders, and contracts.
  • Highlighting areas of concern for potential cost variances, propose actions or solutions where possible with the aim of maintaining the project cost baseline objectives.
  • Develop and deliver protocols to ensure effective funding and cost analyses.
  • Develop and execute project budgeting programs and their review processes.
  • Engage in relevant contractor relationships and technology partnership programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor s Degree in engineering, construction management or related field.
  • Financial acumen and knowledge of finance.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years experience in cost control and scheduling in industrial and/or heavy construction projects over $1 billion, preferably in the chemical or mining industry.
  • Familiar with all aspects of project engineering and project management
  • Familiarity with a variety of construction concepts, practices, and procedures
  • Hands-on experience with applicable software including SAP is required.
  • Must be well organized and can plan complex engineering and construction projects.
  • Strong aptitude for detail, accuracy, completeness and meeting deadlines and commitments with an ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and ability to represent the company and project team in a professional manner.
  • Excellent computer skills, especially MS Office.
  • Self-starter able to work independently and achieve goals.
  • Travel between corporate office, engineering office and field construction office.
