Linn-Benton Community College is Hiring a Publications Aide, Part-Time Near Albany, OR

Independently provides a range of pagination and copy-editing duties to support the production of the weekly student newspaper, The Commuter.
Required Qualifications:
Education and Experience: Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and word processing experience.
Knowledge and Skills: Requires basic knowledge of personal computers and relevant software (e.g. Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Google Docs). Must have basic knowledge of office practices, procedures and equipment. Requires good English, grammar, spelling, punctuation, math and keyboarding skills. Requires good planning and communication skills. Prefer some basic journalism knowledge, including copy editing and newspaper page design, and a working knowledge of newspaper editing and production terminologies and practices. Knowledge of Apple Macintosh computer, pagination and design software preferred.
Abilities: Requires the ability to perform the duties of the position effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision. Must be able to operate personal computers and relevant software. Must be able to meet required schedules and deadlines. Requires the ability to communicate with contacts both inside and outside the organization in a manner that reflects positively on the newspaper and the college. Requires the ability to work closely with other staff to accomplish the overall objectives of the department.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prefer at least one year experience working in a publication or related environment.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Physical Skills and Abilities: Requires good hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate computer keyboard, and other office equipment. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers on a computer screen and written materials. Requires speaking and hearing ability sufficient to hear over phone and carry on routine conversations.
Working Conditions: Work is normally performed in an office setting with little or no exposure to health and safety hazards. Substantial time spent working at a computer.
Essential Duties:
Electronically formats full pages of the newspaper, including placing page numbers, page headers and other standing items on each page, placing edited stories on the page, writing headlines, photo captions and other copy as needed, and pasting in ads designed and approved by the ad manager.
Types stories, letters, columns, and briefs as assigned.
Creates an InDesign file corresponding to the number of pages for the current issue.
Assists the ad manager in designing ads as needed.
Prints proofs of each page for review by editors and other staff. Makes corrections on proofed pages.
Assists editors with layout and design of stories, including selection of artwork (e.g. photos, graphics) and editing of content.
Saves page files regularly to ensure corrections are saved and that production staff is working with most current version.
Downloads completed pages to off-site printer, including contacting printer to ensure that pages have been received, and remains on duty until printer indicates job is clear and ready for publication.
Completes page processing on production night.
Assists editors in posting content to newspaper website.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
