Linn-Benton Community College is Hiring an Instructional Support Assistant, Mathematics Near Albany, OR

Provides assistance both in and out of the classroom by helping students in their study of math. Provides an essential link between the math students and support services in the college.
Required Qualifications:
Education and Experience: Position requires an AA/AS degree in mathematics, mathematics education, physics, engineering, or a related field, successful completion of differential and integral calculus with a grade of “C” or higher, and at least one year’, full time, directly related experience.
Knowledge and Skills: Requires a broad knowledge of mathematics and the ability to shift rapidly between questions from widely different areas. Must have a working knowledge of instructional techniques and skills sufficient to instruct and tutor students on an informal level. Requires knowledge of subjects taught and strong communication skills to interact with a diverse population of students.
Abilities: Requires ability to help individual students or groups of students in or out of a classroom setting. Requires ability to independently perform the essential responsibilities and work tasks of the position. Must have demonstrated ability to understand and interpret staff instructions in order to assist students. Requires the ability to understand the needs and differences of students and appropriately respond to those needs. Must be able to use a graphing calculator and a computer (including Desmos, Microsoft Word and Excel). Must be able to work respectfully with individuals from all backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with employees or adult students in a work or instructional setting involving mentoring activities, tutoring and/or set-up/support of learning experiences is preferred.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Physical Skills and Abilities: Must be able to use a computer and other office equipment. Learned physical skill is required to use calculator and keyboard. Requires sufficient visual acuity to recognize alphanumeric characters. Requires good hearing and well-developed speaking ability to communicate with staff and students.
Working Conditions: Work is performed in a classroom setting with minimal exposure to safety or health hazards.
Essential Duties:
  • Assists students at all levels of developmental math and transfer-level courses by answering specific questions about math problems, assigned activities, and various math aids (manipulatives, computers, graphic calculators, etc.). Demonstrates tasks and develops aids to reinforce learning.
  • Works closely with the instructor to coach group interactions,activity-based learning, and just-in-time review in the developmental and co-requisite math courses. Communicates effectively with instructor about student progress.
  • Acts as the bridge to academic support services at the college. Reaches out to underperforming or at-risk students in Math and collaborates with support services to develop individualized plans for student success. Informs students about math courses and Learning Center procedures.
  • Assist in recruiting and supporting embedded tutors for math courses, specifically co-requisite courses.
  • Develop and implement math skills support workshops for in-person and remote learning environments.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
