    Description
    The intervener is an integral part to the educational success of a student who is deaf/blind. The role of the intervener is that of a bridge for a child who is deaf/blind to experience the world around him/her self. Because many students with deaf/blindness require extensive and novel modification to education, services provided by an intervener are specially designed to meet the needs of the individual student. The intervener works collaboratively with service providers, consultants and parents. Interveners assist students with deaf/blindness to participate in educational activities. Interveners serve to support and create effective learning environments to meet the educational needs of the student. Interveners assist teachers to meet the communication, academic, social and emotional needs of the students with deaf/blindness in regular and special education environments.
    Qualifications
    • High school diploma or GED
    • Minimum of one (1) year of experience working children who have a visual impairment and/or a hearing loss
    • Must obtain first aid/CPR certification and maintain active certification
    • Must have or obtain certification in LIU approved crisis prevention program
    • Special Education Paraprofessionals must meet one of the following if not held at time of hire:
    • An Associate’s Degree or higher;
    • Completed at least two years of postsecondary study; or
    • The successful completion of a state or locally developed assessment.
    • The LIU recognizes two (2) local assessments to assist paraprofessional staff in attaining the PDE requirements: The Special Education Credential of Competency OR the CAPE test. Completion of either must be within one year from date of hire.
    • Must also complete twenty (20) hours of professional development related to assignment each year (July 1-June 30) in order to continue employment.
    • Must complete the LIU Intervener Certification Program
    • Must be enrolled in a PA recognized Intervener training program, module, or cohort upon being hired. Within 2 years of Intervener hire date, must have completed the PA recognized Intervener training program, module, or cohort (e.g., Open Hands Open Access) including submission and acceptance of portfolio.
    Terms of Employment
    Full time, 188 days.
    Salary
    Intervener pay scale (Minimum $21.54 per hour), plus benefits
    • The LIU offers a generous benefits package to full-time employees, including:
    • Medical (for a nominal premium), dental and vision insurance. The LIU pays the premium for dental and vision insurance.
    • All full-time professional staff receive a $30,000 life insurance policy, which is paid for by the LIU.
    • Employee Assistance Program (EAP). For any employees and eligible dependents. You have the opportunity for 3 free counseling sessions per year, per person.

    • Full-time employees who are scheduled for 188 days/year receive 10 sick days and 3 personal days. If hired after the start of any year, the leave is prorated.
    • Access to the Lincoln Health and Wellness Center. For employees who are on the LIU insurance and any dependents on the insurance, you have access to the Lincoln Health and Wellness Center. Visits include no deductibles, little to no wait time, same or next day appointments may be available, virtual care is an option for certain types of visits, more one-on-one time with the provider; You also have access to a Patient Advocate/Counselor.
