The LIM Living Design Engineering Project Manager is responsible for bringing creative solutions to complex design, engineering, and manufacturing problems in prefab and modular home construction. An incumbent in this position must be able to effectively solve problems between departments and quickly make decisions to move projects toward completion. The Design Engineering Project Manager will blend technical capabilities. They will spearhead the design process, from conception to realization, leveraging their deep understanding of engineering principles. This includes crafting meticulous project plans, managing design teams adeptly, overseeing the manufacturing team to ensure seamless integration between design and production, and ensuring rigorous code compliance with regulations. The responsibilities span budgeting, scheduling, risk mitigation, and meticulous quality control, all while actively collaborating with internal teams and external consultants. The role’s hands-on approach will ensure the seamless delivery of high-quality modular homes within deadlines and budgets, while consistently driving product and process improvements and superior outcomes, including proof of concept validations for new design innovations. Being a strong and constructive communicator is critical, as they will work with colleagues across departments and at all levels to solve problems and innovate creative solutions. To be successful, a person in this role must be able to drive tasks to accomplish the Company’s larger goals within the set budget and timeline. 

Job Expectations:

  • Evaluate the feasibility of design, product, and manufacturing ideas, based on factors such as appearance, safety, function, production costs/methods, and market characteristics.
  • Use design software programs to create and review architectural and engineering drawings.
  • Deliberate with production, design and engineering, and senior management to achieve final decision on which direction to take on the proposed designs, ensuring structural integrity and safety. 
  • Present designs and reports to CEO, as needed, for approval and discuss possible needs for modification.
  • Research production specifications, costs, production materials, and manufacturing methods and provide cost estimates and itemized production requirements.
  • Investigate product characteristics such as the product’s safety and handling qualities, its market appeal, and how efficiently it can be produced.
  • Coordinate the look and function of product lines.
  • Coordinate the work of production, design, and engineering and direct decisions in a productive manner.
  • Advise CEO on issues involving projects to ensure they are moving forward.
  • Analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems as they arise.
  • Work with a creative mindset to bring forward new ideas and ways to make processes better.
  • Foster constructive and cooperative working relationships with all departments.
  • Develop specific goals and project plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish the larger project goals set forth by the organization.
  • Provide guidance and expert advice on technical, systems, or process-related topics.
  • Check and ensure that designs and engineering are in compliance with state and local ordinances.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to lead teams, motivate members, and drive projects to successful completion. 
  • Mastery of design software such as Rhino, AutoCAD, Sketchup, or similar programs to create and review architectural and engineering drawings, ensuring accuracy and compliance with standards.
  • In-depth knowledge of structural engineering, building codes, materials science, and construction techniques to guide design decisions and ensure structural integrity and safety.
  • Understanding of manufacturing process specific to prefab modular homes, including assembly line operations, material handling, quality control and lean manufacturing. 
  • Familiarity with project management tools like Gantt charts, scheduling software, and collaboration platforms. 
  • Knowledge of building systems such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and familiarity with sustainable design practices.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills and ability to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Ability to identify and solve complex technical and logistical challenges and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with internal teams, clients, contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of Geometric & Dimension Tolerancing (GD&T), FEA, DFM, 6 Sigma and Cause & Effect Analysis. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and disciplines to achieve project goals.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing project requirements, schedules, and priorities in a dynamic manufacturing environment.
  • Effectively consider the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple projects at a time.
  • Strong attention to detail and high degree of accuracy.

Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, or Structural Engineering), Architecture, or a related field, required. 
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering Management, a plus.
  • Certifications such as Project Management Professional or certifications specific to modular construction, a plus.
  • Prior experience in architectural design, structural design, or engineering roles within the construction industry, preferably with exposure to modular construction methods.
  • Experience managing projects, teams, budgets, and schedules is crucial. Experience in modular construction projects is a definite plus.
  • Understanding the manufacturing process, quality control procedures, and production workflows within a modular construction setting is highly beneficial. 
  • Experience in client communication, contract negotiation, and managing stakeholder expectations.
  • Familiarity with Eco-friendly and sustainable materials and products is a plus.
  • Must be proficient in G Suite and/or Microsoft Office Suite, competent in Asana and/or Adobe is a plus.

 Working Environment:

The majority of work is performed in an indoor office setting and/or home office. You must follow all LIM Living policies on safety and ergonomics as outlined in the Company policy. You are expected to inquire about safety and ergonomics when uncertain or entering a new work environment where hazards may be present.

You must be able to sit at and navigate a computer workstation for eight hours or more per day.

On occasion you will be required to travel locally or out of town to attend meetings, trade show events, customer sites, etc.
