STATUS: Full time, Exempt

SALARY RANGE: $70,000-$85,000

Founded in San Francisco in 1902, the LightHouse's purpose is to promote the independence, equality and self-reliance of people who are blind or visually impaired. The LightHouse is currently in a period of growth, increasing our capacity to serve more low-vision and blind clients.

OVERVIEW :

The Accessible User Experience (AUX) Specialist is a key, full time position at LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired (LightHouse) in San Francisco. The AUX Specialist reports to the Director of AUX. We are seeking a passionate and experienced AUX Specialist to support our efforts in ensuring that technology and digital experiences are accessible to individuals who are blind or low vision. The AUX Specialist will play a crucial role in advocating for and advancing accessibility standards/practices and partnering with organizations to improve the accessibility of their products/services in both the nonprofit and for-profit sectors and the broader community. This position will involve supporting accessibility/usability testing initiatives, UX research studies, and accessible UX trainings, along with collaborating with stakeholders and supporting strong relationships with corporate companies to promote accessibility best practices.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., accessibility studies, computer science, human-computer interaction, UX design, etc), or a minimum of 2 years of experience in accessibility advocacy and accessibility testing for websites and apps on both computer desktops and mobile devices.
  • Extensive experience using assistive technologies is required (JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, Zoom/Magnification, etc.)
  • Experience with accessibility testing tools is strongly preferred, such as Deque axe Tools, IBM Equal Access, Level Access tools (Access Engine), Fable AUS, WAVE, etc.
  • Strong knowledge of accessibility standards and accessible UX design principles, including WCAG, Section 508, and ARIA.
  • Strong project management and organization
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills and presentation abilities.
  • Passion for promoting inclusivity and accessibility.
  • Experience with accessibility-focused user research studies (preferred).

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  1. Accessible UX Testing & UX Research:
    • Conduct accessibility/usability assessments and usability walk-throughs of websites, applications, digital content, and hardware products.
    • Provide recommendations to partners on accessibility standards, such as WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) and UX design principles.
    • Communicate with a database of accessibility/usability "trusted testers" that can be deployed to support AUX projects with partners, such as user testing and UX research studies.

2. Reporting on AUX Testing and UX Research

    • Support the Director of AUX with compiling reports and documenting results from accessibility/usability testing and UX research studies.
    • Co-present the results with the Director of AUX during virtual and in-person meetings with partners.

3. Stakeholder Collaboration:

    • Collaborate with developers, UX designers, UX researchers, content creators, and other stakeholders at partner companies to help implement accessibility improvements.
    • Support the Director of AUX with sharing guidance and recommendations to internal and external teams on accessibility best practices.

4. Advocacy and Outreach:

    • Support the Director of AUX with promoting LH's Accessible UX Services and advocating for accessible UX solutions in the nonprofit sector and beyond.

  • Ability to carry or transport 20lbs
  • Sit at a desk and perform computer-intensive work for long periods of time
  • Operate standard office equipment
  • Travel independently as needed
