Description

We are seeking a Youth Services Instructor who will provide Rehabilitation support services to individuals with visual impairments residing in the service area of Lighthouse Central Florida, Inc.

Basic Function:

  • Maintain the confidentiality of program participants following State and Federal regulations
  • Participate as a member of the Rehabilitation Services team and support all aspects of Lighthouse Central Florida's Program Services
  • Participate in and support the values and mission of Lighthouse.

Job Requirements:

  • Provide support to vision rehabilitation instruction, including:
    1. Transition (teens') and Children's Program events
    2. Parent and student adjustment services.
    3. Summer Program
    4. Residential and Overnight
    5. Job Coaching
    6. Recreational activities
  • Facilitate experiential education activities in support of specified vision rehabilitation goals.
  • Provide counseling and guidance to service recipients and their families to accomplish adjustment to vision loss and maximize the benefits of participation in vision rehabilitation.
  • Complete requested documentation to support the program staff progress reports.
  • Follow and assist in the preparation of lesson plans.
  • Participate in event planning and client staffing as requested.
  • Provide information and referrals as necessary to program participants
  • Participate in department meetings to ensure communication and teamwork
  • Comply with agency policies and procedures, including completion of required documentation and reports
  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications


Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in education, psychology, social work, or related field (preference will be given to individuals with training/experience in visual impairments)

License and Certification:

  • None Required
    • Adult and Youth: CPR First Aid Preferred

Experience: Minimum of one year experience working with individuals who have a disability preferred

Demonstrated Knowledge and Skills:

  • Possess excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to triage for service delivery
  • Possess knowledge of community and blindness resources
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Possess a working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Skilled in the use of standard business machines and computers
  • Possess an ability to utilize the database for client demographics, case documentation, and agency reports
  • Professional maturity, judgment, and objectivity
  • Possess effective organizational and time management skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, management, business professionals, civic organizations, private corporations, and the general public
  • Ability to project a positive, compassionate image to the public
  • Ability to cope with and support change
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality as required within a variety of circumstances

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to move about independently
  • Moderate ability to move and lift items, usually up to 15 lbs.
  • Prolonged standing upon occasion
  • Prolonged sitting at a workstation

  • Pass background checks
  • Have a reliable means of transportation

For employees living with visual impairments, you must provide documentation from a physician of legal blindness. Legal blindness is defined as: "Central visual acuity does not exceed 20/200 in the better eye with correcting lenses OR whose visual acuity, if better than 20/200, is accompanied by a limit to the field of vision in the better eye to such a degree that its widest diameter subtends an angle no greater than 20 degrees." These conditions are based on the federal Javits-Wagner-O'Day work program for legally blind individuals.
