Lewis County PUD is Hiring a Chipperman Near Morton, WA

About the Position

A Chipperman is an entry-level position in which their main function is to assist and support the District’s tree trimming crews by falling trees and disposing of brush by chipping, burning, and hauling away. Job assignments may entail very physical manual labor, heavy lifting, equipment operating, Class A vehicle driving, working in rough terrain and inclement weather day and night.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist Tree Trimmers in maintaining proper clearance of the District’s electrical system by removal, trimming, or other treatment of encroaching trees and vegetation.
  • Operate all equipment associated with tree removal, including aerial man-lift, stake bed dump truck, chipper, pickup, and chain saws.
  • Fall trees and dispose of brush by chipping, burning, and hauling away.
  • Maintain courtesy and respect when handling confrontational situations.
  • Work effectively and cooperatively with District personnel and the public.
  • Control traffic as required.
  • Uses good judgment.
  • Understand and follows safety rules.
OTHER POSITION FUNCTIONS:
  • Assist in storm damage repair as assigned.
  • Make incidental repairs to equipment not requiring the skills of a mechanic.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalency.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated ability to be punctual and regular in attendance.
EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS:
  • Safely operate district motor vehicles.
  • Occasional use of standard handheld tools including hammers, pliers, ax, jackhammer, chainsaw, and screwdrivers.
SUPERVISION:
  • LEVEL OF SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
  • Minimal supervision; regular status reports will be required.
  • LEVEL OF SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position is not supervisory in nature.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Capable of heavy manual labor for extended periods, day or night, in all weather conditions; emphasis on upper body, back and knees.
  • Lifts and carries up to 60 pounds on a regular basis and loads exceeding 120 pounds occasionally.
  • Must have color vision and night vision.
  • Must be comfortable to work at heights.
  • Must have good hand-eye coordination.
  • Must have mechanical ability to operate the tools, equipment, and vehicles of the trade.
  • Hears and is heard clearly in spoken conversations with heavy background noise.
  • Wears personal protective equipment as required.
  • Works in awkward positions.
  • Must be able to safely drive district vehicles in changing weather conditions.
  • Works outdoors, day and night, in all weather and driving conditions, while working in close proximity to high voltage.
  • May require work hours in excess of 40 hours per week, 8 hours per day, 5 days per week.
  • Must wear proper apparel in accordance with the District’s dress code policy.
  • Must wear all assigned PPE as needed for work requiring protective equipment.
  • Must be able safely walk in variable footing conditions including mud, snow, ice, etc.

OTHER REQUIRMENTS:
  • Must be able to pass the District’s background and reference checks, field test indicative of actual working tasks, physical examination, including but not limited to, periodic CDL physicals, and random drug and alcohol screening mandated by law.
  • Must be able to pass District physical examination, general aptitude, and skills testing.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and with a Class A CDL endorsement with no air brake restrictions.
  • Must have a First Aid Card with CPR.
  • Must have a Washington State Flagger’s Certification Care.
  • Must be able to work overtime as required.
  • Must qualify for the District’s auto liability insurance.
