Job Summary:

This position is responsible for the performance of a variety of physical tasks involving the construction, maintenance, or repair of electric utility facilities and equipment.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

· Adhere to safety practices and procedures, such as checking equipment regularly and erecting barriers around work areas.

· Test conductors, according to electrical diagrams and specifications, to identify corresponding conductors and to prevent incorrect connections.

· Open switches or attach grounding devices to remove electrical hazards from disturbed or fallen lines or to facilitate repairs.

· Climb poles or use truck-mounted buckets to access equipment.

· Drive vehicles equipped with tools and materials to job sites.

· Operates equipment such as bucket trucks, line trucks, trenchers, backhoes, underground locators and various power and hand tools.

· Constructs, maintains, and/or repairs electric utility facilities and equipment including, but not limited to, meters, poles, towers, and cables as directed.

· Reads and interprets electrical prints, maps, and schematics.

· Responsible for the preventative maintenance program for the department’s equipment and tools.

· Performs the duties of the City/Board’s electrical inspector including trench inspections for underground electric and electric utility installation with subdivisions.

· Responsible for the electric utility locates as required by Miss Utility.

· Responsible for maintenance of records for substations and related equipment including actual pole and substation inspections, clearing vegetation in the Board’s right-of-ways and substation areas and coordinating the tree trimming program each year.

· Knowledge of traffic laws for motorized vehicles.

· Assists in handling multiple priorities and projects.

· Shares the responsibility for the preparation of material specifications as required.

· Trains electric personnel.

· Responsibly enforces the safety rules, including the determination that proper clearance and grounding for the protection of his crew have been established.

· Performs any necessary clerical work incidental to the job.

· Trains staff personnel as needed.

· Assists in recording consumption data from water and electric meters as directed.

· Assists in checking electric meters for proper functioning, tampering, or other operational problems.

· Connects and disconnects meters as directed.

· Installs, maintains and repairs streetlights.

· Troubleshoots electrical system problems.

· Deals courteously and diplomatically with the general public.

· Assists the Water/Wastewater Department as needed.

· Must respond to customer calls within thirty minutes.

· Abides by all Safety rules and Incident Investigations outlined in the BPW Safety Procedures and/or the safety procedures outlined in the Individual Departmental Manual.

· Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

· Extensive experience and knowledge in the field of electric distribution and transmission.

· Extensive knowledge and experience with the use of the NATIONAL ELECTRIC SAFETY CODE.

· Any combination of experience and training which provides an equivalent to the minimum desirable employment standards.

· Trouble shooting.

· Operations monitoring.

· Critical Thinking.

· Coordination.

· Finger Dexterity.

· Problem Sensitivity.

· High level of safety acumen.

· Will be required to work rotating schedule of On-call Night Shift, from Thursday 12:01am through Wednesday 12:00am.

· Employee must use reasonable care, judgment, and application of their knowledge in the performance of their duties.

Education and Experience:

· High School Diploma or equivalent required.

· Successful completion of a lineman apprenticeship program and/or formal training in area of specialty.

· Possession of a valid Class A CDL Delaware driver’s license and a good driving record.

· CPR and First aid certifications a plus.

· NIMS Training.

Other certifications may be required after hire

Physical Requirements:

· Work is typically performed outdoors, in all weather conditions, in awkward or cramped positions with moderate contact with the City’s citizens and the general public. The incumbent works at heights and around electrical hazards.

· Must be able to lift, push, carry and/or pull loads of 80-100 lbs.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $40.00 - $48.00 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 40 per week
