The Sandra and Leon Levine Jewish Community Center is a non-profit, social service agency founded upon Jewish ethics and values. The Center provides and initiates diversified social, educational, recreational and cultural programs within a Jewish setting. The JCC is a partner in serving the community, is affiliated with the JCC Association of North America and a beneficiary agency of the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte.

POSITION PURPOSE:

The Cultural Arts Counselor is an essential member of the Cultural Arts Camp Staff. From serving as an assistant to members of the production team (Director, musical director, choreographer, stage manager, and/or designers) to supervising everyday camp activities and leading basic theatre games as a group counselor. The Cultural Arts Counselor is responsible for creating a safe and open environment that encourages campers to participate and engage in a wide variety of activities and experiences. The Cultural Arts Counselor is responsible for supervising campers through a full day of camp activities, providing assistance to Cultural Arts Specialists as needed. In addition, the Cultural Arts Counselor promotes the acceptance and belonging of all individuals regardless of race, religion, cultural/ethnic background, sexual orientation, gender identity, or socio-economic status. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Under the supervision of the Cultural Arts Unit Director, the Cultural Arts Counselor will serve as a group counselor and assistant to the Cultural Arts Specialists. The Cultural Arts Counselor will participate as a member of the Cultural Arts Summer Camp staff for a total of 8 weeks. 

More specifically, the Cultural Arts Specialist will:

  • Supervise a specific group of campers throughout their daily schedule of activities.
  • Assist and/or lead basic theatre games and activities during counselor-led activity blocks.
  • Prepare and organize materials prior to the start of each content block/camp day.
  • Assist in transitions, lunch/snack times, morning/ afternoon carpool, and other times of the day.
  • Utilize effective behavior management strategies as necessary.
  • Attend and contribute to weekly staff meetings.
  • Ensure all campers and fellow staff are following rules and guidelines established by the Unit Director.
  • Follow daily and weekly schedules presented by Cultural Arts Unit Director.

Requirements

  • Basic experience in the visual/performing arts either as a student, performer, or educator.
  • Interest in learning about other arts areas beyond current experience.
  • Basic experience/interest in working with children in an educational, camp, or caretaker setting.
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively as both an individual and as part of a team.
