Description
Summary
This position is responsible for supporting the agency's accounting and tax-exempt compliance functions. This includes managing the organization's accounts payable function; contributing to a timely month-end close; supporting banking and day-to-day cash management; preparation of complex accounting entries; and participating in financial and/or tax audits

Salary and Benefits:
  • Approximate annual salary $58,000
  • Competitive benefits package including medical insurance, 401(k) with match, life and long-term disability insurance, and access to other benefits including vision and dental
  • Work-life balance including 37.5 hour work week, 3 weeks of vacation, paid sick time, paid parental leave, holidays, flexible schedule, and a hybrid working schedule with the ability to work from home up to 60% of the time

  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office 365, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Essential Functions/Approximate Time
Accounts Payable (45%):
  • Process staff check requests, ensuring proper account coding, supporting documentation and supervisor approvals.
  • Issue payments (typically paper check) at least weekly and additional as needed.
  • Maintain vendor tax documentation and issue year-end form 1099's.
  • Communicate with staff and vendors regarding pending payment statuses and other questions.
Month-End Close (35%):
  • Prepare monthly journal entries, including payroll entry, recognition of prepaid expenses, gift card distributions and various banking-related entries.
  • Process staff credit card logs, ensuring proper account coding, supporting documentation and supervisor approvals.
  • Reconcile operating cash account to monthly bank statement within the accounting system.
  • Perform monthly account reconciliations for prepaid expense and payroll liabilities accounts.
  • Work closely with the AR Accountant to ensure proper coding of all billable expenses.
Audit & Compliance (10%):
  • Assist with agency annual financial audit and other funder compliance reporting requirements.
  • Prepare year-end closing entries.
  • Maintain and document internal controls. Suggest new controls as needed.
Fixed Assets Processing (5%):
  • Maintain fixed assets inventory within the financial/accounting software.
  • Set up fixed assets, maintain asset schedule and retire assets as needed.
Other (5%):
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Work Environment/Physical Demands
Combination of walking, sitting, standing in an office setting. Constant written and verbal communication. Occasional lifting, stooping, bending or climbing.

Requirements
Education and Licensing
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent.
  • Education or experience in nonprofit accounting desirable but not required
Experience
  • Progressive experience in an accounting role, including experience in accounts payable and monthly and annual closing processes.
  • Experience using financial/accounting software; Blackbaud Financial Edge and/or Raiser's Edge experience desirable.
  • Thorough understanding of accrual-based accounting and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
