SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION

The Health Coordinator for Leman Academy serves in a pivotal role to provide expertise and oversight for the provision of school health services and promotion of health education. Using clinical knowledge and judgment, the Health Coordinator provides triage healthcare and information to scholars and employees, as well as performs health screenings and coordinates referrals if necessary.

The Health Coordinator for Leman Academy of Excellence serves as a member of the scholar Support Services Staff and is the leader in the school community to oversee school health policies and programs. The Health Coordinator serves as a liaison between school personnel, family, community and healthcare providers to advocate for health care and a healthy school environment

Line of Authority/Reports to: The Health Coordinator shall be directly responsible to the Principal and may assist the Office Manager when necessary in providing services required for the administration of the school in order to assure the smooth, efficient operation of the K-8 school office

Qualifications/Minimum Requirements:

  • AZ IVP Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card / Background and Criminal History Clearance.
  • Two years of successful nursing experience or health related experience. Preferred State RN, LPN or CNA or Certified Medical Assistant.
  • Current Certificate of Completion for Hearing and Vision Screening Training.
  • School experience preferred with a working knowledge of school organization and procedures.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills to positively impact school community with an ability to build strong relationships.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with scholars, parents, co-workers and the public at large.
  • Strong commitment to providing leadership in promoting health and safety, including a healthy environment.
  • Able to provide quality triage healthcare with an ability to intervene with actual and potential health problems.
  • Working knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services.
  • Considerable knowledge of child growth and development.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite products (Excel, word, etc.) and familiar with other related software programs.
  • Ability to work independently prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines maintaining a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to operate office equipment as required on assignment; i.e. fax machine, copier, computer, etc.
  • Ability to set-up and use an efficient filing system.
  • Ability to compile information, prepare reports, maintain confidentiality in performing assigned tasks, adopt effective courses of action, and deal effectively with parents, staff, and the general public requiring knowledge of school policies and procedures.
  • Ability to lift boxes and packages of varying weights and move them to other locations.

Duties and Areas of Responsibility:

  • Works under the direction of the Lead School Nurse
  • Maintains policies, procedures and develops work standards for school health program. 
  • Monitors compliance of school health program with federal, state, and local laws, regulations and policies.
  • Initiates program changes as needed.
  • Prepares health reports for Principals and other Administrative personnel as well as health department (required county and state reports to cover immunizations and hearing).
  • Provides first aid care and medically prescribed services (per the state's Nurse Practice Acts and Scope of Practice).
  • Review and update all scholar medical files at the start of each school year, notifying parents of any deficiencies.
  • Update scholar medical files throughout the school year.
  • Oversee and track sports physicals and communicate pertinent health information to appropriate school personnel.
  • Inventory/stocking school medical supplies and first aid kits.
  • Oversee the storage and administration of school supplied treatments and any parent-supplied medicines.
  • Serve as a health resource person for the school office staff and faculty.
  • Partners with parents on health needs of children/scholars and communicates plan to appropriate personnel - and includes tracking and making changes as needed.
  • Recommends corrective action/intervention where problems are identified.
  • Provide parents with information regarding school epidemics.
  • Provide the State's Department of Health with a list of scholars with communicable diseases as outlined in the State's guidelines.
  • Provide screening services for:
  • Vision screening and referral as needed per state guidelines..
  • Hearing screening and referral as needed per state guidelines.
  • Parent notification regarding any vision/hearing screening results that do not meet state criteria, follow-up on notifications, communicate diagnosis and any school accommodations to appropriate personnel as well as completion of required state reports.
  • Monitor and update scholar immunization compliance per state requirements. Notify parent s of any deficits. Follow up on notifications with parents and administration as needed.
  • Serve as a resource person for safety and health classes.
  • Is on call to answer office staff and faculty questions regarding:
  • Contagiousness of sickness.
  • Need to send scholars home for medical reasons.
  • Education of staff as government requires regarding current health issues within the school and community environment.
