English Learners (EL) Teacher Job Description

SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION:

The primary responsibilities of the EL Teacher is to support the curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional learning, as well as maintain the district EL program policies and procedures. The EL Teacher collaborates with site-level staff to plan, deliver, and individualize instruction for all EL scholars; work together creatively to accommodate EL scholars with special needs, diversity and educational backgrounds of the scholars; and overcome instructional challenges constructively. The EL Teacher will also serve as the 504 and MTSS Coordinator for the school.

QUALIFICATIONS/MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree or higher. 
  • Valid Arizona Teaching Certificate, preferred.
  • Structured English Immersion (SEI) endorsement, or willingness to obtain.
    • Preference will be given to candidates who hold an SEI endorsement.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish, preferred
  • Three years of demonstrated teaching experience
  • Valid AZ IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card / Background and Criminal History Clearance.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • Thorough knowledge of EL laws and regulations.
  • Requires the ability to work with administration, teachers, parents, and scholars in a variety of situations and work effectively in a team-oriented school
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Strong computer skills, including Google Suite
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work cooperatively, effectively, and respectfully with staff, parents, and scholars from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to operate office equipment as required on assignment; i.e. fax machine, copier, computer, etc.
  • Ability to lift boxes and packages of varying weights and move them to other locations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

EL Responsibilities

  • Establish and enforce rules and procedures for responsible behavior, maintaining order among the scholars for whom you are responsible.
  • Plan and conduct 1 hour per day pull out per scholar (can be grouped)
  • Monitor classes to ensure EL standards are being taught and recorded in planbook. 
  • Provide Azella testing and placement testing of each new scholar with EL indicators on enrollment.
  • Maintain trainings for testing 
  • Maintain EL files on campus.
  • Maintain SIS (Synergy) and update District EL spreadsheet for DTC to update with ADE.
  • Send out all testing letters per campus by appropriate deadlines.

504 Responsibilities

  • Acting 504 Coordinator for campus
  • Review documentation for all new incoming 504 requests
  • Schedule meetings with all 504 team members
  • Hold all 504 meetings
    • Meetings must be held annually for all scholars on a 504 plan by their plan date.
    • Review documentation for all annual reviews to determine if scholar still meets educational requirements.
  • Maintain all paperwork for scholars
    • IEP Pro
    • Synergy
    • Google Drive
    • Cumulative folders
  • Work with Gen Ed teachers to ensure accommodations are met for each scholar

MTSS Responsibilities

  • Work with school administration and teachers to facilitate and implement the MTSS supports.
  • Monitor the fidelity of implementation of MTSS including identification of scholars and the delivery of Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 interventions and progress monitoring.
  • Data collection for each scholar in MTSS
    • Responsible for the oversight of Synergy for intervention at each campus
  • Submit monthly MTSS reports to District Office
  • Assist teachers in using MTSS
  • Communicate with families regarding student progress
  • Participate in SST meetings to advise on the use of data for tiered interventions and to design intervention plans aligned to scholar needs
  • Serve as the liaison between SST and ESS team
  • Will be the point of contact and will make the referral for evaluation for ESS

Additional Responsibilities

  • Enforce administration policies and rules governing scholars.
  • Use computers, audiovisual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations in alignment with our classical model. 
  • Attend professional development meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops in order to maintain and improve professional skills and competence.
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required.
  • Perform duties such as assisting in hall and cafeteria monitoring, and supervision of drop-off and pick up of scholars.
  • Select, store, order, issue, and inventory classroom equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Maintain confidentiality per FERPA.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure that scholars, staff, parents and the district are functioning in collaboration.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and Leman Academy of Excellence guidelines regarding EL programs
  • Knowledge of EL instructional and assessment methods and practices
  • Knowledge of proper English grammar, usage, and spelling
  • Skills in developing and delivering ILLP
  • Skill in coordinating an EL program and maintaining mandated records
  • Skill in communicating effectively, orally, and in writing
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff, administrators, scholars, and parents
  • Assists with translation and interpretation, as needed (preferred)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Position requires standing, sitting, and moving from one position to another as well as the occasional need to lift, carry, push and or move objects up to 30 pounds. Verbal communication is generally required. The position requires the use of computer technology such as computers, video, projection, and associated technology. Indoor classroom environment and outdoor playground and exposure to all weather conditions. Interfaces with the public, employees, families and scholars.

Full-time, Salaried-Exempt, 7:30 am* – 3:30 pm*, M-F

*Responsibilities and duties, including but not limited to traffic duty, may extend beyond contracted time.
