The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

TheLaboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animalcare and technical support services for animal research performed at theNational Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for CancerResearch. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum ofstate-of-the-art technologies and services that are focused on the design,generation, characterization and application of genetically engineered andbiological animal models of human disease, which are aimed at the developmentof targeted diagnostics and therapies. LASP contributes to advancing humanhealth, developing new treatments, and improving existing treatments for cancerand other diseases while ensuring safe and humane treatment of animals.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for the daily careof research animals with focus on non-human primates
  • Performing general animalhusbandry and technical functions in support of research studies utilizingnonhuman primates (NHP) models
  • Feeding, housing, and maintenanceof animal hygiene
  • Providing occupational,structural, social, and edible enrichment to ensure animal well-being
  • Record keeping and databasemaintenance
  • Receipt, weighing, andidentifying animals
  • Maintaining a proper livingenvironment for nonhuman primates including enrichment, behavioral assessment,social housing and training
  • Observing and recording physicalsigns of nonhuman primate health and record data
  • Performance of specializedtechnical procedures necessary to maintain continuous operation of the animalfacility
  • Assisting in conducting animalexperiments
  • Operation and maintenance ofvarious laboratory, surgical, and cleaning equipment
  • Responsible for maintainingsupply inventory, cleanliness, and general upkeep of a research animalfacility
  • Work requires the use of personalprotective equipment and adherence to strict protocols
  • Work schedule willinclude rotating weekend and holiday hours
  • Other Duties as assigned

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Any combination of education andprogressively responsible technical experience which qualifies the candidate tosit for the LAT Certification Exam within 12 months of hire –or- (CHEA) Associatedegree in Life Sciences of Veterinary Technology
  • Foreign degrees must beevaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience
  • Will encourage achievement of LATCertification; however, this is not a requirement
  • Experience in handling non-humanprimates
  • Ability to keep detailed recordsand maintain experimental data in a computer-based application/database
  • Knowledge of standard operatingprocedures for animal facilities and basic requirements for maintaining andscientific procedures in animal testing and data collection
  • Must possess basic MicrosoftOffice skills
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

  • Basic necropsy techniques
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Eagerness to learn new skills
  • Excellent organization andobservation skills

  • This position is subject to working with or have potential for exposure to infectious material, requiring medical clearance and immunizations
  • This position is subject to atmospheric conditions that would require the usage of a respirator, requiring a medical clearance
  • This position is subject to working in or have the potential to exposure to high noise levels for extended periods of time requiring medical clearance
  • This position may require continuous or intermittent exposure to and exertion in environmental conditions such as working outdoors, temperature extremes, humidity extremes. etc. as part of the job
