The Performance and Readiness Division under the Leidos Health & Civil Sector has a unique opportunity for a Laboratory Manager to support the Warfighter Performance Department within the Operational Readiness Directorate at the Naval Health Research Center (NHRC) in San Diego, CA. The Warfighter Performance Department's research mission is to optimize human performance, recovery, resilience, and injury prevention. The Laboratory Manager will work closely with NHRC leadership, Government Principal Investigators, and government and contractor project leads to provide lead management support for the NHRC's Warfighter Performance Department in the management, operation, and maintenance of the NHRC Warfighter Performance Laboratory.

The Warfighter Performance Laboratory includes but is not limited to a Thermal Physiology Laboratory, a Sleep Research Laboratory, a Large Scale Immersive Virtual Reality Laboratory, a Body Composition Laboratory, as well as supplies and equipment to create modifiable, transportable, field-based Warfighter Performance laboratories.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain inventory records of research equipment and supplies, and ensure records and items are available for turnover to government at any time requested by the government or Leidos management

  • Maintain laboratory equipment and develop standard operating procedures pertaining to appropriate handling and storage of equipment. Provide trainings to staff on proper handling and storage of equipment as needed.

  • Communicate with the command safety officer to ensure the department is in compliance with command safety standards, this includes keeping trainings up to date, providing monthly briefs, and attending zone inspections.

  • Using subject matter expertise, work with government staff, principal investigators, and contract team members to determine solutions to difficult research equipment and logistics problems/questions

  • Work effectively with military, government, and contract leadership to determine needs related to laboratory and equipment concerns and determine solutions to resolve any such concerns

  • Troubleshoot human performance laboratory equipment and determine solutions for repair using subject matter expertise. Equipment includes but is not limited to: environmental chamber, body composition machines, immersive virtual environments, exercise equipment, and office equipment.

  • Create statements of work for laboratory and equipment contract and subcontract needs, working with the government customer and contract teams leads to determine appropriate needs

  • Communicate with vendors for maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment, and ensure all agreements and procurement of services is requested through the government and Leidos approved procedures

  • Determine required supplies, equipment, and maintenance contracts, route for approval from government and Leidos

  • Serve as a Purchase Card holder to make purchases for department and directorate

  • Serve as a Purchase Requestor and Goods Recipient as needed for purchases

  • Serve as a Technical Point-of-Contact for laboratory and equipment related subcontracts and purchase orders

  • Serve as a custodian for equipment and supplies

  • Serve as a Building Monitor, working with the government customer to ensure laboratory spaces are meeting federal requirements; attend building walk-throughs with government staff

  • Regularly complete status reports as needed for command and Leidos requirements; present status updates at meetings as required

  • Attend meetings with customer and customer representatives

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required for the customer research mission.

  • Comply with all required Leidos and Government requirements and complete required certifications and trainings.

  • Lead and support tours and inspections of laboratory spaces

  • Travel as needed for customer related meetings and data collection sessions

  • Support Leidos business development efforts such as contributing subject matter expertise.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • High School Diploma plus 8 years or more of relevant laboratory equipment experience, operating, maintaining, and managing equipment and systems like those listed above.

  • Excellent critical thinking with problem-solving skills and an ability to work cooperatively in a team setting.

  • Proven flexibility and performance success in responding to changing demands, timelines, and priorities.

  • Must be able to work on the military customer site at Naval Health Research Center full time, as well as collaborating local military bases within 50 miles of Naval Health Research Center (such as Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Naval Air Station North Island, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, and others)

  • Must be able to travel (locations greater than 50 miles from Naval Health Research Center) as needed for meetings and data collection efforts (approximately 10% time)

  • Must be willing to work overnight, on weekends, and on holidays as needed for urgent research data collection laboratory needs

  • US Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET government security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of experience working in a human performance laboratory

  • Active Duty military experience

  • Experience working with military populations and in a military setting

  • Active Secret Clearance

Pay Range:Pay Range $61,750.00 - $111,625.00

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline onlyand not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
