DescriptionJob DescriptionLeidos is currently seeking a qualified, energetic engineer to fill the position of Field Engineer to assist the Leidos SEAFAC Operations & Maintenance contract at Back Island, Ketchikan, Alaska. Southeast Acoustic Measurement Facility (SEAFAC) is the primary acoustic measurement facility for Pacific Fleet submarines. SEAFAC is located on Back Island, just outside of Ketchikan, Alaska and is operated by NSWCCD Code 70 and their contractor, Leidos. SEAFAC has a shore facility consisting of six buildings and a pier, as well as two major vessel test sites, a static site where the test vessel is suspended at various depths for specific noise investigations and an underway site for performing noise investigations at various speed conditions and depths.
Current and future projects span, maintenance planning and requirements development for the SEAFAC Navy facility and equipment, advanced concept and prototype development, low-rate initial production, and innovative long-term designs for multiple customers. Position may require periodic travel to and coordination with engineering activities at other Leidos facilities and government facilities, in multiple locations across the United States. Initial focus will be on development and support of operations and maintenance activities at the Southeast Alaska Acoustic Measurement Facility (SEAFAC), and other US Navy programs.
The SEAFAC team includes an outstanding group of people who support a broad range of activities for the Navy and other customers.
Primary ResponsibilitiesThis position involves the operation and maintenance of SEAFAC’s equipment, facilities, on/in water assets, systems, supports sea test (installation, recovery, and testing) planning and/or execution including developing detailed modeling and planning for installation and recovery of complex systems and equipment. Some technology development and demonstration plans to mature system from concept design, through prototype development and demonstration, and into production. Identification of program technical risks and the development of risk mitigation and technology maturation plans to address those risks. Identifies, tracks, and manages system requirements and requirements traceability. Implements system engineering processes within the program consistent with company and ISO-9001 standards. Develops and/or augments SEAFAC system procedures, documentation, specifications, and drawings, as needed, to support operation and maintenance activity program deliverable requirements as appropriate.
Specific Task Responsibilities Include
  • Requirements development, design generation, detailed modeling, and hands-on building for a variety of Navy customers with applications including use of submarine telecommunications cables, underwater hardware, installation, and recovery of subsea assets, and more.
  • Developing specific and detailed land based and on-water execution plans for recovery, deployment, and maintenance of complex systems.
  • Review, define, and implementation of operation and maintenance activity program deliverable requirements
  • Definition and direction of system trade studies associated with the design generation of acoustic listening systems for the US Navy.
  • Requirements and design reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR) for any modifications to system Baselines, modifications, and upgrades.
  • Maintaining all documentation for any modifications and upgrades to the Baselines.
  • May require traveling to execute developed plans and install systems in both on land and offshore environments.
  • Documenting external and subsystem interfaces.
  • Risk management and risk reduction activities including analyses and trade-offs to reduce performance and delivery risks; enhance manufacturability, and/or control costs.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical/Ocean Engineering/Naval Architecture or other related discipline. 2-4 years’ total experience.
  • Experience with on-water, underwater/marine engineering, and the unique applications of working in a maritime environment.
  • Experience with SolidWorks software.
  • Working ability to operate OrcaFlex, MathCAD, Matlab, and other analysis tools.
  • Experience in undersea system development.
  • Effectively work with a team establishing strong, collaborative working relationships with government customers, technical staff, senior managers, and peers.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, along with excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must have ability to obtain a Secret Security clearance
Must Also Be Able ToClimb at least 60 feet of rung ladder to access scaffolding, platforms, and other operational positions lift and carry heavy objects of up to 50 pounds distinguish colors remain alert during extended working hours perceive depth work from ladders, sky climbers, and scaffolding work evenings and weekends as required travel to/from the SEAFAC site on a boat operate/learn to operate boats Be able to walk up and down steep inclines (such as gangways at low tide) unassisted
This position will be located at a government site and will involve significant amounts of interaction with Government personnel.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with installation and recovery of Navy or other maritime assets
  • Experience with cranes and weight handling equipment and their operations
  • Experience with materials handling equipment and their operations
  • Strong written and oral communications skills
  • In-field hands on ocean engineering experience
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA) experience
  • Experience with install, repair, and maintenance of alarm systems, various electronic systems such as amplifiers, battery backup systems, radio dispatch equipment, communications equipment, camera systems, variety of lighting equipment, audio equipment, air handling systems, radar systems, cranes, hydraulics, engine powered equipment, and boats
  • Experience maintaining machinery and systems histories/records
  • Ability to drive and dock small boats in varying weather conditions as well as deckhand when needed
  • Experience with private water and wastewater treatment system maintenance/testing requirements

Pay RangePay Range $65,000.00 - $117,500.00
