POSITION OBJECTIVE

Maintain all areas of the Farm in a functional and safe manner. Farm facilities include indoor/outdoor spaces for teaching, research, recreation, as well as meeting and residential areas.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Perform grounds maintenance duties for wooded areas, trails, fields, fencing, recreation sites, residential properties, landscaped beds, and more. Operate farm tractors with mowing and other implements. Operate landscape equipment, including but not limited to mowers, trimmers, pruning tools, log splitter, wood chipper, and snow blowers. Plow snow and spread salt. Perform general landscaping tasks. (50%)
  • Maintain facilities (light carpentry, painting, cleaning, moving furniture, assembling materials) including Farm event spaces, food production centers, barns, classrooms, research spaces, offices, and residences. Perform building maintenance tasks and operate general maintenance tools and equipment. Set up meeting spaces before events, strike furnishings and perform general cleaning inside and outside facilities as directed including removing waste/recycling after events. (40%)
  • Maintain and repair vehicles, tractors and attachments, landscape equipment that includes, but is not limited to, mowers, trimmers, pruning tools, log splitter, chainsaw, and snow blowers. Maintain hand tools, power tools, and equipment needed for minor repairs and cleaning. (5%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assist with enforcing Farm rules and regulations for visitors and assist other Farm program areas when needed, etc. (2%)
  • Help as directed with volunteers (students and general public) and visiting groups (1%)
  • Help instructors set up class or research equipment, direct traffic during large events, and assist contractors as needed. (1%)
  • Perform other duties as assigned. (1%)

SUPERVISION

Supervise the work of student part-time employees.

CONTACTS

Department: Daily contact with full-time Farm staff to coordinate events, visitor assistance, or facilities repairs.

University: Regular contact with CWRU students, staff event coordinators and guests, and faculty members who teach and perform research at the Farm to help with research project set-up.

External: Weekly contact with local government employees, merchants, utility workers, contractors, delivery personnel, other onsite visitors (including school-age children).

Students: Contact with summer student workers and volunteers to help train them to carry out needed tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in performing building and/or grounds-keeping maintenance. Prefer prior farm or facility operations/maintenance experience. Prior experience working with diverse audiences such as students (of all ages) and faculty/staff in a university or institutional, non-profit or government setting is helpful. Education/Licensing: High school diploma (or equivalent) is required. Must have a valid driver’s license.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Must be responsible and capable of staying on-task with only routine supervision.
  • Must be able to work on a team and independently.
  • Familiarity with the proper and safe use of basic hand tools, power tools, and safety equipment.
  • Knowledge with building maintenance operations (painting, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, cleaning, gardening).
  • Must be able to identify and communicate basic problems and work on projects without direct supervision.
  • Strong social skills, with demonstrated ability to interact with diverse audiences, including colleagues, supervisors, contractors, faculty/staff/students, and guests in a polite, respectable manner.
  • Must strive to work in a manner that assists with the Farm’s environmentally friendly ethos and operations.
  • Commitment to keeping work areas tidy and grounds presentable and safe for visitors.
  • Ability to meet consistent attendance.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This is a six-month temporary position at 30 - 35 hours per week. Must be available to work occasional evenings, holidays and weekends as required. Daily outdoor work in a variety of weather conditions is required. The employee must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, operate motor vehicles, climb ladders, and work at heights.

Pay: $17.00 per hour
