POSITION: DETENTION OFFICER

STARTING SALARY: $34,285 GRADE: 300

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Lee County Sheriff’s Office is seeking qualified applicants for fulltime and part-time positions of

Detention Officer in the Jail. Performs protective service work maintaining jail facility security, processing and releasing inmates, and related work as apparent or assigned. Patrols facility periodically insuring security and maintaining order. Supervises inmates during meals, personal hygiene and related activities for conformance to institutional rules, regulations and procedures.

Escorts and safeguards inmates to cell; checks on inmates' physical condition. Assists with visitations; searches cells. Assists with booking and releasing of inmates. Processes inmates; gathers personal and medical information; takes and secures inmate property. Distributes medication to inmates as prescribed or directed.

Prepares routine records on inmates; performs general office duties associated with jail operations.

Ensures the care and maintenance of quarters. Records visits; inspects items brought into the facility; checks incoming and outgoing mail. Must have the ability to carry out oral and written directions accurately; ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility; ability to supervise the activities of large groups of inmates; ability to prepare records and reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Detention officer certification. Applicable training will be provided and must be completed upon hire and on an ongoing basis. Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina. Candidate should be 21 with no felony or serious misdemeanor convictions.
