Position Summary

We are looking for a skilled Model Maker to join our team at the Leatherman Innovation Center. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in machining and a passion for precision and innovation in tool and product development.

Essential Functions:

  • Design, develop, and fabricate prototypes, models, & fixtures to support production and innovation using various machining techniques.
  • Create and maintain CNC programs and CNC setup sheets for all CNC equipment in the Model Shop.
  • Sets-up and operates the complete range of machine tools including lathe, CNC mills, manual mills, EDM, EDM drill, manual and automatic grinders.
  • Collaborates with engineers and designers to understand and translate conceptual designs into functional prototypes and materialize ideas at various stages of design fidelity.
  • Provide creative solutions to design challenges, contributing to the development of new innovations.
  • Utilize advanced machining equipment and techniques to achieve precise and intricate designs.
  • Independently troubleshoot and solve complex tooling problems.
  • Create, revise, and document all necessary control documents and procedures to ensure adherence to best practices within a model shop environment.
  • Contribute to the establishment and organization of a model shop, ensuring it is equipped for both ongoing production needs and the development of new innovations.
  • Ensure adherence to quality standards and project timelines.
  • Maintain and ensure spare component inventory levels are being kept.
  • The inspection, measurement, and verification of components produced by the Model Shop.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Work with department Engineers on continuous improvement recommendations and efforts.
  • Adjust production tooling, as needed, to keep things running smoothly.
  • Participate in initial product manufacturability reviews.
  • Participate in product prototyping review and tooling efforts.
  • Willing to support production as needed.

Education and/or Experience

  • Technical degree or certification in machining, mechanical engineering, or related field is preferred.
  • Proficient in a variety of machining processes, including CNC machining, milling, and turning.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical principles and material properties.
  • Expert knowledge of GD&T required.
  • Experience with CAD/CAM software for designing and machining parts.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills for effective collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Familiarity with Lean manufacturing principles and practices.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will frequently sit; use hands to handle, grasp, or keyboard; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee occasionally stands or walks; climbs; stoops or crouches; and pushes/pulls. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

The employee frequently lifts and/or moves up to 5 lbs., and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 55 lbs. The employee frequently pushes/pulls an average of 40 lbs., and occasionally pushes/pulls up to 70 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Working Conditions/Physical Hazards

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an office environment, and occasionally exposed to production environment. Work area is well lit and air conditioned. All employees are expected to adhere to Company safety policies and wear personal protective equipment when exposed to work areas or performing tasks where it is required. Position is in-office setting based on business need.
