LEAP for Education (LEAP) is a non-profit organization that empowers underserved and first-generation-to-college students to succeed in education, career and life. We do this by teaching students life-skills needed to perform at higher levels, providing mentoring support, and offering opportunities to explore new interests.
Program Description: In partnership with Salem Public Schools, LEAP for Education operates a summer program for middle school students in grades 6-8. The program promotes positive youth development, social emotional learning, and student advocacy. Project-based learning opportunities are offered in the mornings in a variety of areas (including technology, STEM, sustainability, and community service/social justice) to provide opportunities for students to explore new interests in engaging ways, connect school day learning to new applications, and develop team work skills. During the afternoons, students will participate in enrichment classes in the arts and sports.
Program hours: The summer program runs from 8:30 - 2:30 (staff on site from 8:15-2:50) on Monday-Thursday for 5 weeks from July 8-August 8. Group Leaders will occasionally be asked to stay late for team meetings, and some professional development will be provided prior to program start. All meeting and training time will be paid. Group leaders who perform well will be invited to participate in the Expanding Horizons after school program that runs all school year.
Job Description:
Group Leaders are essential in supporting students and assisting lead facilitators in the day-to-day operations of the program. Group Leaders will be assigned to one PBL group of 15-18 students in the morning to assist the facilitator and support students in fully engaging in learning activities. In the afternoons, group leaders support an enrichment class. Within their assigned group, Group Leaders will lead games and activities to build students’ social emotional skills, reinforce behavior expectations and routines, and build a sense of community among the students. Group leaders will build strong positive youth-adult relationships.
The majority of our students are bilingual (Spanish and English speakers) and many are currently identified as English learners. We are looking for more bilingual group leaders to help support these students in program activities.
