Are You Ready to Diversify Your Law Experience? Does this sound like you?

  • You are an associate attorney ready to potentially learn a new practice area so that you can build and grow your own practice.
  • You’d jump at the chance to advocate for people in court.
  • You love the idea of working with a team that can mentor and train you without micromanaging you.
  • You want to make a difference in the lives of real people with the work you do every day.

Then, you may be our next Associate focused on personal injury, worker’s compensation, and criminal defense.

We are all about developing our attorneys to have the skills and knowledge they need to be successful lawyers. We are also building a law firm where people matter—both the clients we serve and the team that works together.

At the Law Offices of James A. Welcome, you’ll find:

  • A diverse team of people who genuinely care about each other and the clients we serve—we empathize with our clients and work hard to help them forge a better path for themselves.
  • A team committed to solving our client’s problems.
  • People collaborating and working together. We have very experienced paralegals who work side by side with the attorneys to create the best results for our clients.
  • Team members who are self-starters, but willing to ask for help when needed.
  • Lawyers who are active learners and striving to be the best at their craft, which means effective communication through speaking and writing (to clients and court staff), strong analytical and negotiation skills, being detail-oriented, and able to project manage an active case load and move cases forward.

And here’s what you WON’T find:

  • Attorneys who think it is beneath them to ask questions or seek help from paralegals and team members who’ve been doing this work for a long time and are super knowledgeable.
  • Team members who don’t care and are just showing up for a paycheck.
  • People who judge our firm’s clients—which include immigrants, criminal defendants, and injured people—or question whether they should even get the help they are seeking.

At Closer Look at the Role:

To be successful, we’re seeking an attorney licensed in Connecticut (or seeking admission to the Connecticut Bar) who:

  • Has some court experience (ideally injury or workers compensation)
  • Is looking to learn more about immigration advocacy, family law, and more to enhance professional development
  • Speaks and writes in English and Spanish (preferred but not a deal breaker)

Your Day-to-Day Responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting legal research using Lexis-Nexis and Westlaw, reviewing, and analyzing legal documents and preparing legal arguments.
  • Preparing and editing legal documents including pleadings, motions, and briefs.
  • Assisting with case management and organization.
  • Providing legal advice and guidance to clients by attending and running client meetings, preparing client communications, and regularly updating clients on their case’s status.
  • Representing clients in court proceedings and hearings and defending depositions.
  • Collaborating with senior attorneys on complex cases.

Details You’ll Want to Know:

  • This is a full-time, in-person role located at our Waterbury office.
  • We also have offices in Danbury, West Hartford, and Torrington that you may be asked to work from occasionally. Some travel will be required to area court houses as well.
  • Starting salary range is expected to be between $100,000 – $125,000 per year depending on experience.
  • Paid benefits including health insurance and paid time offer (after a waiting period) and incentive/bonus pay.
  • Financial incentives for bringing new cases to our firm.
  • Flexible schedule available after the initial training period.
  • In addition to immigration, the firm represents the rights of those in Connecticut who are injured on the job and those injured through the other’s negligence. The person in this role can grow and expand their practice through professional training and exposure to personal injury claims, worker’s compensation claims, criminal defense in state courts, and residential real estate transactions.
