This recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancy and any future vacancies which may occur in the next six months and possibly longer.

HOURS OF WORK : 4 / 10's, shift to be determined based on operational needs. Must be willing to work flexible schedule, including evenings, and grave.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience in the construction trades and safe working practices while on the job;

will be able to learn new skills, perform to the best of their abilities, diagnose and troubleshoot issues in

the field and take direction and retain the information; will be motivated to learn the skill set to become proficient within the position, demonstrate a positive attitude, and understand the importance of their position on the team and within the organization.

A Class A Commercial Driver License, and State of Nevada Water Distribution Certificate Grade I are highly desirable at the time of hire or the ability to obtain one within six months of date of hire.

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the installation, repair and maintenance of the District's distribution mains, service line laterals and related appurtenances to supply residential, commercial, industrial and reclaimed water;

and performs related duties as assigned.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The level and scope of the knowledge and abilities listed below vary according to the I versus II levels distinguished above.

Knowledge of :

  • Uses and operations of power and hand tools and equipment common to water utility industry construction and maintenance; basic trenching and shoring methods and techniques;
  • basic pipe materials, fittings and pipefitting tools and methods; methods for the safe operation of trucks, loaders and related equipment;

Ability to :

  • Perform skilled tasks in the maintenance of water mains and lines; safely operate and maintain tools and equipment; understand, interpret and apply detailed work procedures and standards applicable to repair, maintenance and installation of distribution system mains, service lines, values and other devices and facilities;
  • use PCs and laptop computers to access, read and interpret plans, maps and facility record drawings; follow oral and written instructions;
  • select appropriate methods and techniques applicable to differing devices, equipment and conditions; use independent judgment and exercise initiative in daily work activities;
  • assist in the supervision and training of less experienced personnel; estimate necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments;

communicate clearly and courteously with property owners and the public; establish and maintain effective relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.

Training and Experience :

A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is :

Distribution System Serviceperson I One year of experience in utility or public works-related maintenance or construction work.

A Distribution System Serviceperson I may be considered for advancement to Distribution System Serviceperson II after demonstrating proficiency to perform the full range of duties of the latter class.

Proficiency criteria and the process for demonstrating performance at the levels established in the criteria are established jointly by hiring authorities and the Director, Human Resources and are described in a separate document.

Typically, a Distribution System Serviceperson I is expected to be capable of meeting the proficiency criteria within a 6 12 month period, depending on an individual's prior experience and progression in performing the full range of Distribution System Serviceperson II duties as described in the established performance criteria.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements :

A valid Nevada commercial driver's license, Class A, or the ability to obtain one within six months of date of hire, and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's Vehicle Insurance Policy.

State of Nevada Division of Environmental Protection Distribution Operator in Training certificate within 6 months of hire;

State of Nevada Division of Environmental Protection Distribution Operator's Grade I required to flex to a DSS II.
