    Laramie County School District 1 Counselor

    Purpose Statement

    The job of Counselor is done for the purpose/s of providing and promoting a comprehensive, developmental program of guidance and counseling to assist students in the areas of academic achievement, career decision making, personal-social growth and community contribution and act as a consultant in this regard to school staff, parents and community members.
    This job reports to the Building Principal.

    Essential Functions

    • Assists individuals or groups of students for the purpose of solving problems with peers, teachers, home and family through personal and/or group counseling.
    • Assists students in transitions from elementary to middle to high school for the purpose of ensuring students are successful at all educational levels.
    • Assists students in planning their educational program through counseling, providing information, assessments and post-high school planning (e.g. course selection, schedule adjustments, alternative placement options, etc.) for the purpose of helping to ensure students will be successful after high school in either a career or further schooling.
    • Assists the staff to better understand students by providing sound and current research information for the purpose of enabling the teacher to aid the student's affective development.
    • Collaborates with a wide variety of internal and external groups (e.g. specialist, outside agencies, etc.) for the purpose of supporting student needs, gathering information and addressing problems.
    • Compiles data from internal and external sources for the purpose of analyzing issues, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures and/or monitoring program components.
    • Consults with educational specialists (e.g. school psychologist, EEN staff, administrators, school health personnel, teachers, etc.) for the purpose of gathering and conveying information that will help individual students become successful.
    • Consults with parents regarding student's academic and personal progress for the purpose of advising the parents of available resources.
    • Coordinates with teachers, college and university personnel, resource specialists and/or community for the purpose of providing/receiving requested information and/or making recommendations.
    • Counsels students, parents, and guardians for the purpose of enhancing student success in school.
    • Develops a variety of special programs (e.g. career night, financial aid workshops, etc.) for the purpose of providing information to assist students in the successful transition from high school to career, training and/or continuing education.
    • Maintains manual and electronic documents, files and records for the purpose of documenting activities, conveying information and/or providing an up-to-date reference and audit trail.
    • Monitors students' progress for the purpose of identifying issues and taking appropriate action for increasing student success.
    • Participates as a member or facilitator in meetings, workshops, and seminars that frequently involve a range of issues (e.g. IEP meetings, MDT meetings, staffing meetings, monthly counseling department meetings, professional development meetings, etc.) for the purpose of gathering information required to perform functions.
    • Prepares a wide variety of materials (e.g.reports, correspondence, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
    • Provides information to students about life planning and further education for the purpose of helping to ensure the success of the student while in school and after school.
    • Provides individual and crisis counseling for the purpose of helping the student deal with issues and helping them resolve problems so they can be successful in school.
    • Provides appropriate academic assessments using formal and informal appraisal instruments and procedures for the purpose of determining where the student is presently and what programs or classes might best be suited for the student.
    • Responds to a variety of questions from staff, parents, and students for the purpose of providing information, guidance or referral.
    • Schedules student classes for the purpose of securing appropriate placement and meeting their graduation and college eligibility requirements.
    • Serves as a member of student threat assessment and suicide screening teams for the purpose of addressing student problems and needs and preventing bullying and suicide.
    • Serves as 504 team coordinator for the purpose of ensuring students receive the services required under their 504 program.

    Other Functions

    Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

    Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

    Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
    SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying assessment instruments; preparing and maintaining accurate records; planning and managing projects; and using pertinent software applications.
    KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: stages of child development; codes/laws/rules/regulations/policies; community resources; curriculum and instructional methods; and treatment modalities and assessment.
    ABILITY is required to schedule a significant number of activities, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing a variety of complex processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working as part of a team; and working with frequent interruptions.

    Responsibility

    Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions.     Working Environment

    The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 33% sitting, 33% walking, and 34% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations.
    Experience: Job related experience within a specialized field is required.
    Education: Masters degree in job-related area.

    Certificates: Appropriate Wyoming State Department of Education Certificate and endorsement in school counseling and highly qualified status
