Salary and Benefits: This is a full-time, benefited Manaerial 3 level position. Starting salary range: $69,613.00 - $78,693.00/annually, depending upon experience.

Job Summary: Core responsibilities of this position include:

The Head Rodeo Coach is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Rodeo Program. In addition, he/she will assist the Director of Athletics with the long-term planning and development of the program. The Head Rodeo Coach provides effective leadership, recruitment, coaching and monitoring of student-athletes to encourage successful academic and team performance of both the men’s and women’s rodeo teams.

The head rodeo coach is responsible for working with the LCCC Foundation to raise operational and scholarship funds for the rodeo program. The head rodeo coach is also responsible for working with the Shawn Dubie Memorial Rodeo Committee to host this annual competitive event on campus.

Essential Functions

Essential Functions: – this position is Exempt , is not eligible for compensatory or overtime pay provisions of the FLSA. This listing of essential duties is not all-inclusive, but representative, other duties may be assigned.

Coaching:

Provide effective leadership to student athletes by giving training direction, encouragement, and motivation to prepare athletes for competitive events

  • Adjust coaching techniques based on the strengths and weaknesses of athletes
  • Monitor and support academic development
  • Provide and promote community involvement
  • Positive representation of the college at all times
  • Provide a safe environment for student athletes through actively monitoring activities, equipment, livestock and facilities with efforts on incident prevention
  • Attend all mandatory LCCC, Region and NIRA meetings
  • Stay current of changing rules, techniques, technologies and philosophies relevant to collegiate rodeo

Recruitment:

Conduct student athlete recruitment including travel by meeting with recruits, parents/guardians, current coaches, current school, and other necessary parties

  • Recruit and retain student athletes that will positively represent the college both academically and as an athletic team member
  • Identify, communicate, and offer athletic participation and/or scholarships to prospective student athletes in accordance with all sport-governing bodies/affiliations and in accordance with the college’s procedures
  • Communicate and actively engage the necessary college departments/parties such as Financial Aid, Admissions, Director of Athletics, and the Assistant Director of Athletics when offering Scholarships
  • Effectively build and maintain recruitment channels and relationships with coaches, schools, and communities within the college’s recruitment area

Facilities and Livestock Management:

Manage the facility and livestock by coordinating, planning, and communicating with all campus programs that utilize the agriculture and arena facilities to obtain equitable access that meets the needs of all programs including but is not limited to the Director of Athletics, Assistant Director of Athletics, Program Director of Agriculture, Manager of Agriculture/Equine Facilities, Instructors, and other coaches.

  • Ensure the proper care and handling of all livestock associated with the rodeo program.
  • Maintain, store, issue, etc., all equipment and other materials pertaining to the rodeo program.
  • Ensure procurement of all rodeo related livestock per College contract policy.
  • Assist Manager of Agriculture/Equine Facilities as needed in the procurement of feed, hay, supplies and bedding.
  • Assist Manager of Agriculture/Equine Facilities as needed in the procurement of material, supplies, equipment and services for rodeo related livestock.
  • Oversee the daily care and feeding of rodeo livestock and rodeo athletes’ animals.
  • Responsible for maintaining a clean and orderly appearance of the indoor and outdoor stalls used by the rodeo team and their animals.
  • Assist with maintenance of arena/corrals as needed by Manager of Agriculture/Equine Facilities.
  • Maintain written records on horses/livestock for the rodeo program.
  • Schedule and assist veterinarians for treatment of sick rodeo livestock for prescription drugs, prescribed doses of drugs to be administered, ensure that all treatments are documented in writing and maintained for ease of access.
  • Work with college departments to obtain authorization to purchase new equipment and supplies.
  • Communicate and enforce facility rules and regulations.

Administrative Duties:

Working to ensure all LCCC and NIRA policies, procedures, and regulations are being followed and complied with by properly communicating and collaborating with all departments that have influence on such matters.

  • Coordinate and communicate with Admissions, Financial Aid, and other departments to ensure appropriate registration, admission, and other administrative processing of student athletes
  • Work with necessary departments to plan, monitor, document, and maintain the program budget.
  • Organize and administer rodeo events including but not limited to the Shawn Dubie Memorial Rodeo.
  • Support, plan, and work with the college Foundation to promote program fundraising and generation of scholarship funds. (Lariats & Lace)
  • Coordinate and plan with all necessary college departments to complete necessary procedures, forms, and activities that relate to the operations and travel for the athletic program.
  • Participate annually in the Golden Eagles Sports Institute. 
  • Be present at all sessions/weeks of the Sports Institute.
  • Develop a Sports Institute program for specified coached sport.
  • Supervise and organize participants in specified Sports Institute program.
  • Inform the Director of the Sport Institute of equipment needed for specified sport program.
  • Ensure a safe environment in specified Sports Institute program. Inform Head Athletic Trainer of any medical issues that occur.
  • Inform Director of Athletics and the Assistant Director of Athletics of any misconduct by participants.

Other tasks may be assigned based on contemporary institutional need.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability as a rodeo athlete and ability to coach all men’s and women’s rodeo events.
  • Knowledge of collegiate, regional, and National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association rules and opportunities for students as well as any changes in the field.
  • Demonstrated ability as an equestrian rider.
  • Possess proficiency in coaching methodology, program design and development, program strategic planning, and budgeting.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and pass the van driver training course to be a certified LCCC driver.

  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Demonstrate collaboration, cooperation, and sensitivity in working with students, colleagues and staff in the campus settings.
  • Facilitate partnerships with stakeholders to include but not limited to FFA, 4-H, Universities, private industry.
  • Demonstrate appropriate judgment in making decisions.
  • Knowledge of basic office equipment including (but not limited to) personal computer and associated peripherals, fax machine, multi-line telephone, voice recorders, and other electronic devices.
  • Knowledge of and experience in accounting and budgetary procedures; strong analytical and organizational skills with attention to detail in all areas of responsibility.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate composure and necessary confidentiality with regard to both past and current employee, student, and donor data; documents; issues; etc., and respect privacy needs of all employees, students, and donors.
  • Ability to comply with highly inflexible deadlines ; there will be multiple occurrences of sudden, urgent task completion required.

  • While performing the essential functions of this position a variable work schedule may be required including long work days, evenings, and weekends as needed

  • While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee would frequently be required to move around the assigned work areas as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities
  • There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged sitting, standing, climbing, crouching, and personal computer use, which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor
  • An employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds to perform essential position functions
  • Assisted lift technique is required for all lifts over 50 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus
  • The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasking as well
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be unexpected instances of somewhat loud sounds
  • This position requires travel including overnight travel to events, meetings, and competitions
  • Ability to function in an agriculture environment with substantial animal exposure and without any allergic reactions

Qualifications

Education & Experience Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree from regionally accredited institution
  • Two years collegiate-level rodeo coaching experience or four years of collegiate level or higher (professional) experience as a competitor
  • Driver’s License and ability to be insured by the College’s insurance provider
  • Ability to obtain CPR, First-Aid, and AED certifications within six months of hire date

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field of study froma regionally accredited institution
  • Four years of collegiate level rodeo coaching
