Lantern Community Services is Hiring a Food and Nutrition Facilitator Near New York, NY

Job Title: Food and Nutrition Facilitator

Location: Main Office (with recurring travel to different sites)

FLSA Status: non-exempt

Work Status: Full-time, Mon-Fri (9am-5pm) hours may vary.

Reports to: Food 4 Life Program Manager

Hourly range: $25.82 - $27.47

Objective:

The Food and Nutrition Facilitator will assist the program manager in overseeing the development, operations, and instruction of multiple series of weekly recreational cooking classes, customizing them for the distinct needs of our clientele. The Food and Nutrition Facilitator will assist and facilitate classes that will equip our client population with nutrition education, basic cooking, grocery shopping and meal planning skills necessary to live independently while also offering clients a chance to eat a regularly scheduled shared meal.

Position Type: This is a full-time position with a regular schedule of Monday-Friday from 9-5. Lantern staff may be asked to change the work schedules and hours depending on the operational needs of the site and the agency.


Essential Functions:

  • Supports the Director of Food and Nutrition Programs and Food 4 Life Program Manager with admin tasks, nutrition programs, and data collection and recording.
  • Conducts hands-on cooking, food and nutrition education classes across our sites in Brooklyn, Manhattan and the Bronx.
  • Supplements our agency-wide health and wellness services as part of an overall effort to foster the independence of our clients.
  • Collaborates on creation, improvements, and implementations to existing or projected nutrition education curriculums.
  • Creatively engages our clients on topics of food, nutrition, and healthy lifestyle.
  • Performs other job-related functions, as assigned.


Required Education and Experience
:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Nutrition from an accredited program of Nutrition and Dietetics, Public Health, or related field.
  • Preferred: Aspiring Registered Dietician, or licensed RD and/or Professional Chef with community nutrition programing experience.
  • Preferred: Experience working with cultural diversity, underserved communities, community health education, and group education modality experience.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of the dietary and health concerns of populations impacted by HIV/AIDS, mental illness, substance abuse and homelessness.
  • Preferred: Prior food knowledge and cooking skills.
  • Preferred: Candidates with NYC Department of Health Food Protection Certificates or equivalent food safety training.
  • Preferred: Bilingual skills in English and Spanish.


Work Environment
: This job operates at the main office and supportive housing sites that works with a population that experiences mental illness, addiction, disability, HIV, and other chronic illnesses.
