Required QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education:
Two (2) years of post-secondary education with course work in biology, microbiology, and chemistry, including a 200-level series in biology and chemistry, and a majors course in microbiology
Required Experience:
Two (2) years of experience in an academic or industry laboratory setting as a lab technician or assistant.

Preferred QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred Education
A Bachelor’s Degree in a biological science from a regionally accredited institution, with additional studies in microbiology and chemistry (including organic chemistry) is desirable.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience in microbiology preferred.
  • Experience as a teaching assistant or tutor in science lab classes.

Position Purpose:
This position fills the need for a part-time Life Science Instructional Specialist, who is responsible for providing specialized instructional support to Anatomy & Physiology, Biology, and Environmental Science curriculum. The Life Science Instructional Specialist also provides training and coordination with student assistants and supports the Life Science stockroom/lab, greenhouse, and aquarium lab.
Essential Functions:
  • Assist in monitoring and coordinating laboratory schedules for all Life Science classes.
  • Prepare necessary laboratory materials, equipment, and supplies for student classes and lab activities.
  • Provide instruction to student workers in proper use, safe handling, and maintenance of specialized laboratory equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Supervise laboratory preparation procedures and protocols.
  • Prepare biological specimens and media, chemical reagents, dyes, and solutions.
  • Coordinate chemical spill response and neutralize and transfer waste in accordance with Safety Data Sheets.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff on annual Science Undergraduate Research symposium.
  • Coordinate and support student research projects both in and outside of the lab.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and members of the community to develop and present science outreach activities.
  • Update laboratory procedures and protocols.
  • Support the greenhouse and aquarium lab as needed.
  • Attend to correspondence with faculty and peers to coordinate lab activities.
  • Monitor time sheets and safety training for student workers.
  • Problem solve and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards; maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Statement:
Reports to and works under the general supervision of the Life Science Laboratory Coordinator, and is evaluated by the Division Dean. Work is performed independently using specialized experience and training. Work is reviewed for the quality and efficiency of tasks.
This position may have responsibility to assign tasks, provide priorities and train student assistants and volunteers.
Physical Demands/Working Environment:

  • 75% of the work done in this position requires using laboratory equipment, glassware, autoclaves, centrifuges, hot plates, incubators, microscopes, cameras, and other electronic devices, chemicals, dyes, media, and reagents, microcomputers and printers, copy machines, and other office equipment.
  • This position works indoors and is exposed to usual office working conditions that includes office noises and interruptions, such as printers, telephones, and visitors. This position requires that an employee be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time; perform cognitive and psychometric work for more than six (6) hours a day. Work may require transporting materials up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
  • While performing the essential functions of these positions, employees in this classification may be required to sit, stand, keyboard, write, listen, and speak for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift materials up to twenty-five (25) pounds on a general basis, and rarely up to fifty (50) pounds.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
  • General biology, botany and zoology, field biology, ecology, genetics, anatomy and physiology, and microbiology.
  • General and organic chemistry is required, as well as knowledge of general laboratory techniques and procedures, safe laboratory practices, and applicable rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Nature of hazardous materials, proper handling, use of PPE, understanding of Safety Data Sheets, hazard assessments, and proper disposal methods to be in compliance with state and federal regulations including OSHA and DEQ.
  • Academic laboratory requirements in the content area and skill in applying principles and practices appropriate to that area.
  • Implementing appropriate curriculum activities and materials.
  • Department’s philosophy, policies, and procedures.
  • Appropriate science equipment and supplies needed for lab experiences.
  • Science literature and reference texts.
Skills in:
  • Working with microscopes, data loggers, PCR, and other precision and scientific equipment.
  • Science equipment maintenance and knowledge of microscopy.
  • Operating automated instructional and office systems.
  • Training and monitoring performance of student workers.
Ability to:
  • Work with a wide variety of staff and students.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Read, understand, and interpret federal and state regulations.
  • Effectively direct and coordinate the activities of student assistants and volunteers.
  • Organize tasks and work independently.
  • Keep accurate records.
  • Work safely.
  • Provide support to employees working to meet accreditation standards through evaluation and assessment of student outcomes.
