Natural Areas Specialist – Full-Time (Non-Exempt)
RatePay Grade: D – $19.6892 hour/$40,953 annual to $30.9400 hour/$64,355 annual – minimum starting salary based on prior experience and education
Location: Concord Woods Nature Park, Concord Twp., OH 44077
Position Description: 
Under direction of the Natural Resources Manager, the Natural Areas Specialist implements the restoration and management of old fields, wetlands, ponds and forests.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Performs various habitat restoration and management including but not limited to maintaining old fields, establishing warm season grass and wildflower areas.
  • Manages wetlands and ponds, including algae control, bank/dam management, and wetland plant establishment. 
  • Monitors critical habitats including flora and fauna and assists in developing/implementing strategies for management.
  • Controls exotic or invasive species; assists in managing herbicide and algaecide inventories.
  • Plants, prunes, and maintains new or native trees using proper techniques.
  • Assists with fish and wildlife management projects.
  • Identifies locations, constructs, and monitors artificial nesting boxes for various species of wildlife.
  • Removes hazardous and storm damaged trees; repairs trail surfaces, as required.
  • Conducts and assists with prescribed burns.
  • Performs water quality tests as needed.
  • Performs routine maintenance on land management equipment.
  • Maintains records for land management activities and may assist in writing reports for stewardship projects.
  • Assists with the layout and construction of trails, bridges, decks, shelters, etc.
  • Provides assistance to other departments in the Operations Division as needed.
  • Assures compliance with all related safety regulations.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications: 
  • Associate degree in Natural Resources, Wildlife Management or related field preferred.
  • Ohio Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License required or ability to obtain within six months of start date.
  • 2 years of land management experience preferred.
  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS a plus.
Position Requirements: 
  • In-depth knowledge of natural resource management practices.
  • In-depth knowledge of native flora, fauna, wildlife, and aquatic ecology.
  • In-depth knowledge of invasive species including identification and management techniques.
  • Knowledge of the rules and regulations regarding the use of pesticides in the State of Ohio. Skills in the operation of various types of equipment such as power tools, chainsaws, skid loaders, tractors, UTV, boom mower; and aquatic-related equipment such as an Argo, small boats and canoes.
  • Skilled in interpersonal communication with the ability to interact professionally with all types of people.
  • Skilled in written and oral communication.
  • Basic carpentry skills a plus.
  • Ability to work outdoors with minimal supervision under variable weather conditions.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and expedite work projects.
  • Ability to organize and maintain records.
  • Ability to analyze issues.
  • Proficiency in computer software programs including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • May be occasionally required to work flexible hours, weekends, evenings and holidays.
  • Must possess a valid drivers’ license and insurable on the Agency’s liability policy. Background check required.
