DESCRIPTION OF POSITION :

Coordinates and leads Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners and Sexual Assault Resource Team members in the ongoing operation and development of the SANE / SART Program.

Conducts educational programs and community awareness presentations and participates in education of health care providers, law enforcement and the public as necessary.

Provides professional nursing care to patients in need of a forensic evaluation, as directed by medical staff, and pursuant to objectives and policies of Lake Charles Memorial Hospital.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES :

• Insures SANE Program runs in accordance with State Nursing Regulations, the State Nurse Practice Act, Louisiana State Laws and Statues, International Association of Forensic Nurses Standards of Care and Educational Guidelines.
• Provides education to health care providers and the community to increase awareness and understanding of sexual assault.
• Supports policies, regulations, goals and objectives of the program and Lake Charles Memorial Hospital.
• Participates in gathering of statistical and program data.
• Collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to provide collaborative care (police officers, nurses, physicians, ER staff, etc.)
• Provides supervision and direction to sexual Assault Nurse Examiners
• Provides initial physical and behavioral assessment, clinical specimens / evidence collection in individuals experiencing sexual assault.
• Coordinates the provision of urgent medical evaluation, follow up care, and crisis intervention resources.
• Establishes and maintains clinical and legal records and chain of custody.
• Provides accurate testimony regarding assessment, evidence collection / handling and documentation.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

• Graduate of an approved School of Nursing required.
• SANE - A and SANE -P Certified required.
• 5-10 years experience required working as SANE directly with victims of abuse.
• Completion of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner and Resource Team Training required.
• Current Louisiana or multi-state compact license as a Registered Nurse required.
• Current CPR certification required.

Physical Demands / Work Environment

• Work requires a variety of physical activities including standing and walking for sustained periods, bending and stooping, and some lifting of 50-100 pounds at a time.
• The work environment may be physically confining.
• Many nursing skills require acute hearing ability, i.e. listening with stethoscope to breath sounds and heart sounds.
• Must be able to exchange accurate information with patient, family, peers and medical personnel.
